Chapter two

Present day....

F city hospital.....

For three years, Ava's brother has been battling with a heart disease and she needed a huge amount of money to be able to carry out his surgery, but they could not afford it.

After Matt graduated and Ava took him back to the little apartment she bought but Matt asked her why they were not going home and she told him all that happened, how their father chased them out and told her that he did not need them and because of this news, Matt was rushed beck to the hospital that he just came out from but this time his situation because serious.

Matt was alternating back and forth from the hospital every time and Ava had to work multiple part-time jobs to pay for the medical bills, but it was not enough.

Ava applied for different jobs in different companies. She was a graduate in business administration with distinction. She is a very smart girl.

Their mother died when she graduated from the university and ever since their father married, his mistress, hers and her brother's life had been unbearable.

She sat beside Matt's bed in his room and could not help but began to cry as she saw her brother lying lifeless on the bed. He looked very pale and sickly.

The doctor told her that she had only two days to bring the money for the surgery or else her brother would die.

"Where would she get such a huge amount of money within two days?" Ava thought, crying.

The door to the room opened and the doctor in charge of treating her brother came into the room, but he was not alone. Some few nurses came in with him and started transferring her brother onto another bed and she panicked.

"Where are you taking my brother to?" Ava asked as she stopped them from moving her brother.

"Do not worry Miss Ava, we are taking him to operate on him," the doctor said, smiling at her.

"Operate on him? But I thought that you said you can not carry out the operation on my brother until I have paid for the surgery?" Ava asked.

"Yes, I did, but someone already paid for the surgery," the doctor said.

"Who is that?" Ava asked. She was surprised.

"He prefers to remain anonymous and did not want to reveal his identity, but he told me that he would meet you when very soon. Now if you may excuse me..." the doctor said.

"Okay," Ava said and gave way for them to take her brother to the operating room.

Derrick's office....

Knock...knock....

"Come in," Derrick said, and the door opened and Adam, his assistant, walked into the office.

"How is he?" Derrick asked. Adam obviously already knows that he was referring to Matt, Miss Ava's younger brother.

"I called the hospital director, and he told that he has already been taken to the operating room to carry out the surgery," Adam reported.

"Hope Ava is not yet aware that it was I who paid the money for her brother's surgery?" Derrick asked.

"Yes sir, she does not know. I instructed the hospital director to tell her that you would meet her very soon," Adam said.

"Good. Have you made the investigation that I told you to do?" Derrick asked Adam.

"Yes sir. The day you met miss Ava, she was disowned and chased out the house by her father," Adam said.

"Why?" Derrick frowned his face upon hearing what Adam said.

"Apparently she was accused of causing the accident of her step sister at that time. As a result of the accident, her step sister was in a critical condition," Adam said.

"Did you find out what and where the accident happened?" Derrick asked.

"It happened in the garage of their house and nobody knows how it happened because only Miss Ava and her sister were in the garage but the situation is suspicious," Adam said.

"How do you mean?" Derrick asked.

"Both Miss Ava and her step sister were found unconscious and Miss Ava was holding a metal pipe in her left hand but from my investigation on Miss Ava, I found out that she is right handed not left handed so I think she was framed," Adam said.

The temperature in the office dropped several degrees lower. The office became cold, and this made Adam shiver in fear.

"How did her step mother and step sister treat her?" Derrick asked.

"They did not treat her well. Ever since miss Ava's mother died from a mysterious car accident, her father married her step mother, Sharon and by that time she has already given birth to Clara, Miss Ava's step sister" Adam said.

"That means Ava's father was already cheating on his first wife even before she died?" Derrick asked.

"Yes sir, it appears so," Adam said. "And sir, there is another thing suspicious," Adam said.

"Miss Ava's step mother was the first to know that Miss Ava's mother had an accident even before the police knew about it," Adam said.

"So you think she has a hand in the death of Ava's mother?" Derrick asked.

"Yes sir," Adam said firmly.

"Okay, investigate more to find out about the death of Ava's mother and her step sister's accident," Derrick instructed.

"Yes sir," Adam said.

"How is the search for my personal assistant going?" Derrick asked.

"I almost forgot sir, I just found out that Miss Ava is among the applicants for the post," Derrick is surprised. He did not expect to meet Ava this soon.

"Why did you not inform me about this?" Derrick asked, frowning at Adam.

"Sorry sir, that was the reason for me coming to you. I was about to inform you about to tell you about it then you asked me about the condition of Miss Ava's brother," Adam said.

"Okay. Send a message to Ava that she has been hired and she should start work next week Monday," Derrick said.

"What?" Adam was speechless. His boss just hired someone without even interviewing the person.

"Are you suddenly deaf?" Derrick asked coldly. He was not happy with Adam's reaction.

Come to think of it, the person is Miss Ava and the boss seems to like her. He has been looking for her for three years now and now that he has finally found her, he would not want to let her go. Well, Miss Ava's resume is extremely very good and it would not be bad.

"Okay, you may go now," Derrick said.

"Yes sir. " Adam bowed and walked out of the office.

"We will meet soon Ava," Derrick said to himself.

Back at F hospital...

Hallway leading to the operating room.....

It has been three hours already, and they were not yet been through with her brother's heart surgery. Ava paced around the hallway, rubbing both of her hands repeatedly. She was really scared if something had happened in the operating room.

"What if there is a complication during surgery?"

"Or what if they found out the problem is more difficult than they thought?"

"Ah! What if something happened to her brother in there? No! What am I thinking?!" Ava hit her self repeated on her head.

"He will be fine... he will be fine... he will be just fine," Ava said to herself. Within the three hours that she had waited in front of the operation theatre, different thoughts which were not good ran through her mind, but she said those words to give herself hope that her brother will be just fine.

Thirty minutes later.....

Thirty minutes later, the light at the top of the operation theatre entrance went off and seconds later the door opened up and Ava saw the doctor who operated on her brother come out and nurses came out also pushing her unconscious brother onto the temporary bed.

Ava heard the door open and footsteps approaching her directions, so she raised her head up from her hands it previously was and saw the doctor come out of the operating theatre with nurses, her brother who is unconscious. Ava stood up from the chair she sat and ran to meet the doctor to ask about her brother's situation.

"How is my brother's condition? He is not dead right?...." Ava asked many questions at once that she only noticed that she was not breathing when she was done asking the questions.

"How is my brother's condition?" Ava went back to her first question and asked again.

The doctor saw how agitated Ava was and was not surprised because anyone who is experiencing the same problem would act the same way or even more. He had seen guardians of patients who would throw a fit, but Ava seem to be a lady who is strong willed and can handle and control herself in a situation like this and he admired her for her courage. It was rare to come by.

"He is fine... the surgery was successful and he should be waking up in the next one hour when his anesthesia wears off, so be calm and follow the nurses to your brother's ward" the doctor said softly assuring her. This girl really reminded him of a certain someone who also does hide his emotions (I think you all already know who I am referring to).

Ava's heart calmed down when she heard the doctor assure her that her brother's surgery went well and he would wake up any moment from now. The fact that she knows that her brother would wake up made her happy.

"Thank you doctor! Thank you..." Ava continuously thanked the doctor.

"No need to thank me. It is our job to save lives, and it was also a special request from someone and I was happy and I am also thankful to you for allowing me take up your brother's case," the doctor said. Ava did not catch the doctor's word when he said 'he did it on special request' and could only catch on to the fact that the doctor was thanking her for allowing him to take on her brother's case? She was puzzled.

"Thank me?" Ava asked with a confused face because she can not remember doing anything to make the doctor thank her.

"Haha... your brother's case was a peculiar and rare case and the first of the case I have treated so in a way I was able to learn something new and acquire new knowledge and skills from your brother's case, so that was why I was thanking you," the doctor said.

"Oh.." Ava began to think, 'so it turns out her brother's heart disease was a rare and first case, then the surgery must have been difficult to carry out' she was very thankful to this doctor and she can not even believe that she does not know this doctor's name.

"How insensitive can she be?"

"For the fact that you were willing to operate on my brother even when you knew his heart disease was difficult.... thank you," Ava said.

"You are welcome and it was my pleasure to be of help to you," the doctor said. He patted Ava's left shoulder and was about to walk back when Ava stopped him.

"I... I just remembered that I do not know your name.... what is your name?" Ava asked.

"My name is Dr. Ben but you can call me uncle Ben," Dr Ben said, smiling softly while looking at Ava.

"Okay, uncle Ben," Ava said, "I will be going to my brother's room" Ava said to Dr Ben.

"Okay, go on," Dr Ben said urging Ava forward with him following behind her but he turned left at the end of the hallway while Ava turned right which lead to her brother's room.

The doctor that operated on Ava's brother is Dr Ben, who was the director of the hospital and happens to be a friend of Derrick.
