Happy Birthday
"Wake up quickly," I whispered next to his ear. Almost an hour in and Axe hasn't opened his eyes. He was so at home in his subconscious, as if life there was much more pleasant than coming back here to say goodnight to me.

My eyes stare straight at the broad back of the man standing at the cash register, paying for my meager purchases. My breathing is ragged, after Axe told me the story last night. I didn't ask any more questions about the work accident he mentioned. Let's just say I accepted his excuses, even though I had my doubts about the truth.
