Chapter 43

We found parking and watched the first set of cars race as we sat on the bonnet of Kiara’s car. The sound of the revving engines, the tyres drifting against the hard ground, and the crowds screaming made me feel like I was in paradise. Dust blew up and music blasted, making the women swing their hips. My heart raced as I memorised the track that the cars raced on and knew exactly how to race it.

When my Dad was still alive, he took JB and me here to practise racing. JB lost interest after the first day, but I begged for him to bring me here every day; it’s where I spent most of my time after school when I stole a car good enough to drift in.

Kiara yelled as the cars drove past us, and the woman in the red Volkswagen Polo won. The crowd ran to stand around her car as she climbed out.

"Yay, I’m so happy she won!" Kiara beamed and grabbed my hand.

She then jumped off and ran over to the crowd, pulling me along. We pushed to the front, and the woman who won gave Kiara a massive hug as soo
