My mother's words filled me with a sense of doom and gloom and made me sick to the stomach. How could she say something like that? Did she not know what Javier meant to me? How could she say that there was nothing we could do about it?

We just got him back after he had been on the brink of death for so long, and now we were losing him again to some strange curse that I had never heard of.
