30. DAISY

The apartment smelled like a bakery.

I sucked in another deep breath and let out a sigh. It was a scent I missed most before my Mother got married to John. She used to work at a bakery and I would always tag along because she didn’t have enough money to pay for a babysitter.

Those were the only times I remembered her actually being happy.

“Tell me, Daisy, do you have any siblings?”

My eyes snapped over to Allister. “I have a stepsister.”

“Are you close?” He tilted his head to the side as he waited for me to answer.

“Not really.” I glanced at Elias. “She’s a good actor but in private she’s really mean.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

I smiled. “It’s okay. I prefer it that way.”

“So you’re a bit of a loner like our Elias.”

It was on the tip of my tongue to deny it, but I nodded instead. Hiding away in my room all day made me a loner, didn’t it? Except now things had changed because I spent most of my days with Elias and my nights with all of them whenever Alex and Valiant made it home.
