I froze and looked at her. “Is it? Shit!”

“Dollar!” Milka screeched. “Bad word! Dollar for pig!”

Elena grinned when I placed Milka down and riffled in my pocket for my wallet. Shittin’ hell. I flipped it open and pulled out a dollar bill. Milka stared at me expectantly, her chubby hand held out in front of her.

“I give you this, you go sleep, okay?”

Milka narrowed her dark eyes. “You bad.”

“Yes. But so are you. So take this, go to sleep, and we’re even. And . . .” I bent down, leaned in, and whispered, “I’ll get you a blueberry muffin for breakfast tomorrow before Mama wakes up, all right?”

“Aiden!” Elena scolded.

“Okay,” Milka sighed dramatically. “My dollar, tankoo.”

I smacked the green bill into her hand then lifted her. Elena threw Bunna and Dolly across the room to me. I caught them expertly with one hand, one after the other, and passed them to Milka, who snuggled into my chest with them.
