Chapter 48: A Note of Fear

Orvyn's POV

"The Mutes?" I was lost in a grim tunnel of confusion. "That's impossible. No offense, Olive, but that can't be true. The pack borders are well fortified. There's no way they could have penetrated my defense undetected."

The mindless beasts of Mount Cara were a nightmare to the realm. Their presence in my pack means someone had sent them after one of us. It's my responsibility as Alpha to keep my House safe. And the Mutes would not tarnish my soaring record.

Olive was exhausted. She rubbed her temples, and sank into one of the chairs in my chambers, downing a cup of water in a noisy gulp. I needed someone I trusted with us, so I asked Conrad to join us in my chamber. Like me, he found the news much amusing.

"With magic?" Olive asked. She was sure of what she saw, but I wanted to believe otherwise.

"Of course not! It's clear the border patrol didn't do their job well." I almost screamed the words out.
