The cruelty of fate

Drops of rain beat upon the car windshields as Dax sat behind the steering wheel with Carmen in the passenger seat.

Both of them had not spoken since they left the Golden Eagle hotel.

“Don't take me home?” Carmen finally gained the courage to say.

“Can I ask why?” Dax mumbled, keeping his eyes fixed on the road.

“Just because…”

“Okay... Where are we heading then?”

“Anywhere except my house and yours.”

For a moment Dax's eyes swayed away from the road and passionately gazed at Carmen. Then he placed his focused back.

“How are you feeling now?” Dax mumbled.

Without taking her sight of the window glass and the several dots of raindrops on it, Carmen softly breathed.

“I feel hot.” She absentmindedly mumbled.

“Same. Maybe it's the heater. I think that I should turn it off.” Dax worriedly said.

Hearing the discomfort in his voice, Carmen stared away from the window and gazed at him.
