CHAPTER 43

She held my hand, her small fingers curling around mine with surprising firmness. Anastasia, a precocious three-year-old, seemed fascinated by my nails, studying them with a keen interest. She had a natural curiosity that hinted at an early love for fashion.

Every so often, she tugged at my hand, wanting me to pick her up so she could get a closer look at my hair and nails. It was quite smart of her for such a young age, showing an awareness and curiosity beyond her years.

As we finished sharing gifts, the play ground filled with the joyful noise of children happily playing with their new toys. I couldn't help but think back to my own childhood. If I had been sent to an orphanage when I was younger, would this have been my experience?

Would I have found joy in simple things, despite the hardships? Growing up without a loving support system had been difficult, and I fervently hoped that these children would find their forever homes. That was my deepest wish for them.
