CHAPTER TWENTY- THREE

--Alyssa---

My mate was seated in front of the car, with his mother beside me. I didn't want to look at anyone, so I turned my gaze out the window, trying to distract myself with the passing scenery. Before we entered the car, his face had been stoic, showing no emotion. Now, tears threatened to come out, but I held them in. I didn't want them to see me as weak.

His mother glanced at me occasionally, making me feel uncomfortable. It was as if she was trying to read me, trying to understand what was going on in my mind. Her scrutiny made the already tense atmosphere even more oppressive.

The journey had stretched on for over two hours, and I was exhausted. I wanted to sleep, but I couldn't bring myself to do so. I was scared—what if they did something to me while I was asleep? My mind was a whirlpool of anxious thoughts, making it impossible to find any peace.

My stomach growled loudly, breaking the silence and adding to my embarrassment. Everyone in the car could hear it, even his bet
