Miller’s POV

It has been a day since me and Cora arrived back at Pembroke.

I was seriously considering stepping down as the alpha, but later this afternoon, the elders would arrive to discuss what they felt would be best in going forward for Pembroke.

It was extraordinary to be back here at Pembroke.

I had no heir and no Luna.

What could I even offer anyone anymore?

Isla did not want me, and my chosen mate had turned out to be nothing more than a stupid, foolish user who had met her death.

Not that I could blame Isla for killing her.

I was sitting by the lake, dipping my toes into the water and listening to the birds chirping in the sky, when I heard a rustle of leaves and twigs breaking from somewhere close behind me.

Then I heard a slight growl and a whimper of fear, which made my heart sink a little:
