I know that Penthesilea and Phlegyas don’t trust me, and the feeling is mutual. I have never trusted those two. No one knows that neither of their mothers survived their births, but Penthesilea and Phlegyas killed each of their mothers when they were young. Both of the women had come to me explaining that a god had gotten them pregnant and that they wanted to survive the birth and keep the children hidden. I helped both of them and helped them spread the rumour that neither one had survived the birth. Both of the women had gone into hiding with my help. The women had never told either Penthesilea or Phlegyas who their father was. They had found out on their own and became pissed at their mothers. When Penthesilea and Phlegyas turned 13, they had each killed their mothers but had made it seem like an accident. I knew the truth that the deaths were no accident.

“They are suspicious of you,” Taj said.

“I know, but that’s all they have,” I replied.
