The end of the beginning

It's too quiet.

We've been driving for what feels like hours but has been mere minutes, and Leonardo still hasn't said a word to me. After I walked out of my parent's house, despite my mum calling for me and my brother trying to stop me from leaving, Leo tried to talk to me when we got settled in the car but I ignored him.

I could feel his gaze burning a hole in the side of my face as he drove and looked at me occasionally. His phone has been ringing repeatedly but he ignores the call again as he did the first time. Since then his mood has changed and he's been quiet. I can tell because I noticed his jaw clench after he checked who was calling.

After a few minutes of silence from both of us and his phone, it rings again. He looks at it, and his clenched jaw tells me all I need to know. "In my experience, if someone keeps calling repeatedly it might be because they have something important to say. You should pick up."
