Chapter 2: Second Time

Second time

I was greeted by many vampires scattered in the area where Volter live. They are all staring at me with fear in their eyes. None of them wanted to come near. Am I so intimidating that even if I just pass by, fear will show on their faces?

Since the death of my identified vampire parents, I no longer stayed in this place because I felt it was too crowded for Volter and me.

“Miss Syrie, Chief Volter has been waiting for you for a while,” the woman stationed at the entrance of the house greeted me. I just nodded and followed her.

The door of the room opened where there is Volter. He is sitting on the swivel chair while his legs are crossed and facing me with a smile.

“Welcome to our house, Syrie!” he said. My forehead furrowed.

This is not what I expected him to open up to me. I examined his face but it was blank as if he’s blocking my ability to see how a creature feels.

“Have a seat, my little sister,” he offered. I did not say a word and sat quietly on the vacant chair.

“Tell me,” I said directly. “What do you need?”

“Oh! Come on, Syrie. Am I not allowed to invite my sister to our own house?” He’s holding the cup containing fresh blood. He’s even rocking the chair.

“It’s unusual, isn’t it?” I provoked.

“Of course not! I just want to greet you and besides, we don’t see each other anymore. I just want to be with you at least once, is that forbidden?”

He got up from the seat and approached me. My forehead wrinkled again. I looked at him seriously and examined him.

“Why so sudden, Volter?” I asked in wonder.

He smiled. “Why you’re so mean, Syrie? Our parents left you to me. I have responsibilities to you,”

“Is that so? Is that why you let me go and leave this house?” I asked him as if I want to challenge his reasoning.

“That was a long time ago, Syrie and now I want to fix our relationship as brother and little sister. Who else is on the same side? It’s just us, isn’t it? If we join forces against the werewolves, we can avenge our parents!”

“Mind your own business, Volter. I have my way of taking revenge and I can do it on my own,” I got up from the seat and walked away.

“What if you just come back here to our house?”

 I stopped.

“Thanks but no thanks, brother.”

I took another step but I stopped again after I’ve thought something.

“Opps! Wait. Volter, please tell your pets I’m not their enemy so don’t mess up with me if they still want to live.”

I’m referring to the vampires I’ve fought earlier.

“Huh? He wants you back to your house?” Trina’s shocked reaction when I said what we talked about.

“Why not? Right, Syrie?” Vernon said sitting on the sofa.

I ignored them because my mind is tired of thinking about Volter’s offer while on a seat facing the two.

“But we know Volter, he’s the kind of vampire who loves to be always the one on top and doesn’t want to be outdone. Are you sure that when you get back there, everything will be loose and well?” Trina’s opinion.

“But Volter is right, no one else will conspire to avenge our parents but only us,” I said seriously.

“You, being here, doesn’t mean you’re not on his side. It’s better to be like this. You, being the captain of yourself.”

“Yeah! I think so, you have a point Trina,” Vernon agreed.

“Thanks for the opinions of you two. I have to think, I’ll go out for a bit” I said goodbye then got up and left the house.

The cool, fresh breeze greeted me immediately. When I get into the quiet area, I hugged myself and look up at the tall trees that go along with the wind blows. I couldn’t understand why I am hesitant to accept Volter’s offer. Not that I doubt him, I just feel like we don’t fit in the same house or environment and many vampires have been very opposed to me even before.

“Hey, Syrie why are you out here?” I turned around and saw Persuz who had just come home from Volter’s camp.

“Why did Volter call you?” I asked directly while looking straight into his eyes. His eyebrows rose while his hands are hidden from the leather jacket he’s wearing.

“He wants me to make you agree with what he wants,” he said.

“That’s all?”

“Yes, why?”

“Ah! Nothing, go ahead and come in,” I said.

I turned around and face the trees. I’ve been wondering the entire afternoon whether or not I will accept Volter’s offer. Little by little darkness engulf the surroundings and this is the time that I wanted to take a walk around.

I started walking into the forest where there is a stream. I want to hear the murmur of water and touch it. I have mastered the jungle and I am not afraid of danger to come because I am always prepared for what may happen.

Eventually, I reached the stream. Its murmur sounded like music to me. I smiled and was eager to touch the cold water. I approached the stream with the desire to touch the water. The cold water brought me a strange joy. If my parents were still alive, they would be here to watch me swim and paddle in this stream.

I removed my hand from the stream and slowly stepped a little away. I wait to calm the moving water and there I looked at my reflection. It shows sadness caused by the memory that revives my desire to revenge.

From being emotional, I got alarmed and acted quickly as I felt that a werewolf is watching me. I stood up and looked around.

“Come out whoever you are,” I said boldly as I prepare myself.

Soon a man came out of the lush grass and I am right, it’s a werewolf. I stepped away quickly. I know he’s not a normal wolf, the energy I feel in him is strong.

“I just happened to be here and I didn’t mean to see you,” the man explained immediately.

I stared at him and I knew he was telling the truth. But why do I seem to have seen him? Right! He was the villain who helped me yesterday.

“Then, why were you watching me?”.

“I just sensed that someone’s here. I’m just curious who or what it was, then I found out that it’s you, an arrogant werewolf woman,” he said meaningfully while looking into my eyes.

My blood seemed to boil at what I heard from him.

“I’m not, but you are!” I replied angrily.

The man smiled and stepped closer to me.

“Admit it, Miss. If you’re not arrogant then why didn’t you thank me when I helped you yesterday?” he challenged.

“Because I didn’t ask for your help.”

“No, because you’re arrogant.”

“How dare you!”

In an instant, my appearance changed. Hair came out all over my body along with my fangs and long nails. My bones broke and turned into a wolf’s bones structure.

“Grrr!” I muttered defiantly.

“Oh come on! You’re too annoyed,” the man returned in a call manner.

I could no longer restrain myself, I attacked him. I jumped quickly towards him but he quickly dodged. The ground was almost plowed when my feet landed there. I tried to attack again but the man was very quick to dodge. I wouldn’t let that I couldn’t get along with him, I run fast around him, faster and faster. When I had time, I jumped up to grab him but was surprised that he still managed to escape.

“Grr!” I growled.

“Easy, Miss,” he said

“No! I have to hurt you or even kill you!”

I jumped yet didn’t fall on him but behind him. He turned to me at the same time as I jumped. He avoided my attack again. I slowly walk closer to him. I need to get close to him so I can devour him. When I was only a few feet away from him, I rushed at him and when he was about to avoid me, I jumped on him and finally caught his body but, why did my whole body suddenly seem to weaken?

When I was about to prick my sharp nails into his body, I couldn’t. I lost strength for no apparent reason. I couldn’t move my body and I knew I was about to change form for some unknown reason. My whole system doesn’t seem to work anymore. And just as I expected, I went back to being human, naked, and the worse thing is that I am sitting on top of this man.

My strength returned but I knew I could not transform into a wolf this time. When I was ready to stand up, the man quickly hugged me which caused my eyes to widen.

“What-“

“You’re naked, remember?”

The word struck me and kept me on my knees with him. I forgot I am naked.

I slightly deviated my body from his body.

“Just close your eyes,” I ordered. “Don’t you dare to open it, I’ll make you blind!” I threatened.

“Uh-uh!” he agreed while cutely laughing.

“Here I am with eyes closed. I don’t want to lose my eyes, I still want to see how sexy you are,” he said mischievously followed by a laugh.

“How dare you! Pervert! I was about to get up again but I remembered I was naked.

“Eesh, I am just kidding. Wait, just stay still,”

I felt his hands move towards the jacket he’s wearing. He tried to take it off even though he was lying down and fortunately he did.

“Here, wear this,” he said.

While I’m so close to him, he laid the jacket on me. I took it and held it tightly.

“Wear that on the bottom.”

I did not speak.

“Stand with your back facing me, I’ll just keep my eyes closed,” he added.

I look at him doubting. “And how can I trust you?”

“Just do it,” he commanded. “I’ll never look at you.”

I don’t know why did I believe immediately. Why did I lose my doubt so easily? Who is this man?

I slowly got up and quickly turned around. I tied both sleeves of the jacket around my waist.

I hear the crackle of the man getting up. He did something but I didn’t see.

“Wear it.” He offered me the dress and based on that I knew he had turned his back. I am hesitant to take that.

“Do you want to walk home naked?”

I quickly took the dress and put it on. I adjusted the jacket at the bottom so it wouldn’t open.

I looked at him and saw the seemingly molded body of this wolfman. My eyes were fixed on it for some unknown reasons, even though it was normal for me to see naked men.

“Not all creatures in the forest can be matched by you and you can’t win with such a bad temper,” said the voice preaching.

I looked at him rudely.

“And who are you to preach on me?” My tone of voice has risen.

“One of your kind and not an opponent.”

The expression on my face changed. Replaced by anger.

“My kind?” I smiled. “You’re wrong, we are not the same kind of being. I’m different from you,” I angrily returned.

The man’s forehead twitched in surprise.

“How different? You’re no different. You have your tail, your fur, fangs, and claws like us. You’re a werewolf and you’re like us.”

I smiled. “You’re right, I have what physical features every werewolf has, but I’ve been different for a long time. A different perspective. Different compared to all of you!”

“And what is your point of view that is different from ours? Why are you so mad at where you came from?” he replied as if he is annoyed with me but I don’t care.

“It’s none of your damn business!”

“But I want to intervene. Because I don’t know the reason why you deny and hate your race!”

I didn’t want to talk to this man for long nor make him understand me.

“I am not being grateful to you for helping me today,” I emphasized.

The man just sighed and shook his head at what I said. I quickly turned around and ran away to get back home.

Why do I feel this way? Why despite my anger and hatred for someone like him, why can’t I do it to him? Why is something telling me I should let that man into my life? I don’t know, I am so confused.

There is something strange about him that seems to calm the anger in my heart. There is something strange about that man that even though I wanted to be violent, it seems like the heat caused by anger is getting colder because of his presence. Who is he? What’s with him?
