Chapter 55

Mel's POV

We pull up to Elinda's house. I don’t know Jaxon’s real reason for tagging along, but his excuse is that he hasn't seen his mom since the ceremony. I feel like he’s keeping an eye on me, which is annoying because I don’t need a babysitter. Dad is locked up, hopefully not getting out any time soon, and I can handle this news to my sister by myself.

"Are you okay?" Jaxon asks, pulling open the car door for me.

"No,” I finally admit, my voice weaker than I intended. “But I have to rip off the Band-Aid, right?"

He gives me a reassuring smile. "It will be okay."

"Thanks." But his words are just that—words. There's no truth behind them. Nothing is fucking okay. Who knows how Moon is going to take this. What if she hates me for abandoning her the past week? Or she resents me for telling her about Mom? What if she never wants to see me again?
