Prologue

I’m eating my lunch. I noticed Randy and his friends laughing at me. Randy Is Alpha Hughes’ son, the leader of the Highcrown Walkers  Pack since our grandpa passed away. My dad is the older cousin of Alpha Hughes. He’s one of the most powerful warriors in the Highcrown Walkers Pack. My dad can’t take grandpa’s place for reasons I don’t understand. But people say it’s because since I was born lots of the younger wolves died for no reason.

I didn’t get the right answer until now. My dad was silent the whole time and kept telling me to practise even though I hadn’t gotten my wolf by now. They’ve been bullying me for the past year. They don’t like it when I stay at Volvo High School because they think I’m useless. I was a weak and incompetent beta.

Lauryn Anderson, please go to the picket room right away. Your brother is picking you up. You should get to the hospital for a checkup today.

All eyes were on me. I got up and put my lunch away. I sprinted to the picket room while carrying my lunch. When I turned into the outer lobby, my legs tangled in something. I fell, my lunch spilling everywhere.

“Hahaha! Are you blind? It’s 11 pm, sweetie.” Randy laughed at me.

I looked at him. “Did you trip my leg on purpose?”

“Are you accusing me?” he asked. “How dare you?”

“I’m not accusing you, but you are a prankster,” I pointed out.

“Damn it! Do you think I have nothing better to do than prank useless wolves like you,” Randy argued.

Clayton, Steve, and Jason laughed at me. I picked up my scattered lunch without saying anything. I shrugged them off because the more I cared about them, the more redundant and ruder they became.

“Hey, Lauryn . Do you still have the guts to go to school here? You’re a normal human being. You don’t belong here,” Steve said.

I paused and kept picking up my lunch.

“You’re an adult, but you don’t have the potential to become a werewolf. It’d be a shame if Beta Hugo had a weak pup like you,” Clayton said.

“Let’s make a bet, man. My dad will kick her out of Highcrown Walkers  soon,” Randy laughed sarcastically.

“She deserves it, though.” Clayton nodded.

“Hey, Lauryn . Are you daft? You don’t have to pretend to be tough,” Steve complained.

“Why do you always treat me like this? I’ve never treated you guys badly? Why should I be treated badly?” I asked.

Randy grinned. “Never mind, don’t act like you’re the most hurt here. You don’t deserve special favour as much as your dad and brother.”

“I’m not asking you to treat me like dad. I want you to stop bullying me!” I asserted my will.

Randy burst out laughing. “Why are you playing the victim now?”

“Randy!” a thunderous shout rang out.

Chloe O’Brien was approaching us at a fast pace.

“Are you crazy?” Chloe snapped at Randy.

“What’s crazy? I’m just having fun with a useless wolf here,” Randy replied.

“You bullied her! You’ve gone too far, Randy. Lauryn is your cousin, even if she’s useless,” Chloe fumed.

I looked at her earnestly. I found sincerity in Chloe’s gaze.

“What’s wrong with you, Chloe?” Jason asked Chloe.

“You’ve gone too far. You shouldn’t have acted so childishly,” Chloe kept complaining.

Chloe looked at me. She held out her hand to me. I smiled and took her hand. Chloe gripped my hand tightly. A terrible itch attacked my hand. Chloe smirked.

“Why are you doing this to me, Chloe?” I asked.

I cried as I scratched my palm. The blisters are getting worse.

“I know you like eucalyptus, Lauryn.”

“You guys are so mean!” I cried.

While I sobbed, a glass of chocolate washed over me along with scoops of ice-cream. Everyone in the park laughed at my state, Jammie and Abbie kept pelting me with ice cream and any other food they found.

“Please stop!” I pleaded.

Jammie shouted, “Weak humans shouldn’t survive here.”

“Stop it!” I continued to plead.

Abbie laughed in delight as she walked over to get some pork soup from the canteen kitchen. Abbie poured it over me.

“Ohh… my poor weakest wolf…,” Abbie sneered.

“Why do you keep assaulting me?” I cried.

I held back the burning in my hands and endured the nausea I suffered from the pork soup. I picked up my lunch bag. I wanted to escape from their presence. Someone tackled me and made me crunch down in front of Randy.

“You don’t need to kneel before me. Because my dad will banish you from Highcrown Walkers soon,” Randy said.

Chloe laughs, “Don’t you guys want to have fun, mate?”

“Oh, wait a minute.”

Jason stepped in and grabbed my bag, which was all out of shape. Jason pulled out my diary.

“What are you gonna do? Why don’t you know that someone’s privacy is something important?” I asked in disgust.

“Are you wondering what's in this diary?” Jason picked up my diary.

“Something so fun is in there,” Randy revealed.

Jason read the entire contents of my diary. Everyone laughed when they heard I had feelings for Alpha Bennet, our literature teacher.

“You are a weak human! You can’t have an Alpha Bennet,” Abbie scoffs.

“Do you think Alpha Bennet wouldn't reject you if he was meant to be your mate?” Jammie asked with a laugh.

“Do you dream of reaching for the moon?” Steve asked in a mocking tone.

“You have no manners. It’s another person's privacy and no one has the right to act like that,”I shouted.

Chloe slapped me. “How dare you shout at me?”

I glanced at him with irritation. I can’t help it when everyone’s making fun of me all the time.

“I’m going to report your behavior to the principal, so you get the punishment you deserve, Chloe,” I muttered.

“Are you serious? Do you have the balls to report our behavior to the principal?” Randy was leaning in front of me.

He grabbed my jaw and held my head up.

“You have no authority at all like Alpha Hughes or Alpha Bonaparte,” I said.

“Because I’m not them, Lauryn. Think of yourself, you are weak, you have no potential to be a wolf, you cannot be a strong wolf as the grandson of Alpha Bonaparte, you are a disgrace.”

“So, you think you're a hero, Randy?” A voice surprised us.
