32: Sign Of The Times

BLAIR

The sound of a little girl's cries awakened me from my slumber. I sat up in bed, careful not to awaken Mikael who was lying right beside me with his arm around my waist. I gently moved his arm away from me and covered him with the blanket. Then, I slipped on my house slippers and robe.

The little girl crying outside, sounded like she was in a lot of pain and it made me both worried and curious. When I finally opened the door and stepped into the front porch, I was surprised to see the little girl sitting on the floor. She was dressed in a denim jumpsuit and a checkered white and red shirt. Her blond hair was tied up in messy pigtails. She was also barefooted.

She looked up at me when she noticed my presence. Her eyes were bloodshot and filled with tears, her lips were trembling as she cried. I noticed the cuts on her face, neck and arms. They looked quite painful. Several thoughts crossed my mind.

Had she run away from home?

Was she lost?
