It was only when we turned into my street and the tiredness began to make itself felt in me that I became a little calmer. And when Nick parked at my front door and turned off the music, the cocoon of silence around us was almost eerie.

"Well, thanks for the nice evening and bringing it home," I smiled at him and played with my fingers on the straw from the shop that I had taken for reasons that I knew. "Was really funny with you."

He laughed softly. "I'll take that as a compliment."

"That's how it was meant," I grinned and looked briefly at the house. The windows were dark. That probably meant that Uncle Roderick had already laid down. "Well, I'll go in then." My fingers felt for the seat belt and loosened it.

"Grace?"

When I looked up, his face was suddenly right in front of mine. When did he lean forward that far?
