Chapter 47

Elena stood, and at Mr Griffin's harsh command, began to push her phone towards him. Liam timed this perfectly, and with a deft sweep of his arms, got the briefcase between the phone and Mr Griffin's outstretched hand.

"Oops," he said, beaming at Elena, "didn't see your car coming. Is there any scratch?"

Elena hardly smiled; the questions she had to answer had made her a breathing skeleton. She had traces of gathered tears in her eyes.

"Liam!" his father shouted, quite loudly. "Let the damn phone go."

Liam ignored him and pressed a button on the briefcase. It wheezed open. The audio box sat inside, the box where all evidence to prove Elena's innocence was contained.

But before he played the audio, Liam said to his father and uncles and aunt, "Dad, I'd want to give you one more chance to rethink what you're doing to my wife. Maybe there had been so much hatred for her that it has led some of us into extremities. This is a chance to come clean now."

"What nonsense do you speak about?"
