Chapter Twenty-Eight

“What do you have to say about my mother, Conrad?” I questioned, wiping my tears as if that would help in not letting him know that I had just been crying some seconds ago.

“You didn’t tell me about it. How am I just finding out about it from someone in the family?” He questioned.

I didn’t know which one to react to first – the fact that the news was still being passed around in the family and me being the point of discussion between everybody, or the audacity that Conrad had to be telling me something like that after everything.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know that I was supposed to confide in you when any small thing happens to me, Conrad,” I said, the bitterness so obvious on my tongue that I could taste it.

“This is not something small, Lauren. I know you’re still processing the shock of it, but you could have told me. Granted, I may not be the best person to tell about something like this as you understandably don’t trust me, but what about Shirley?”
