Chapter Twenty-Seven

“What?” I asked, stunned at the emergence of the new order that was never in the picture in the first place.

“Did you not hear me the first time? How clear do I have to make myself?” He cleared his throat comically and spoke as if trying to break something down to a child. “I want you to put some tiny microphones all over Damien’s house just for me to be sure that you’re not telling him anything.”

“How do you expect me to do all that? It’s not even my house. He knows the place more than I do, he’s definitely going to find half of them even if he doesn’t find them all.” At this, Damien looked at me consciously with a raised brow, and I blinked slowly to let him know that I would tell him when I hung up.

“You have to find good hiding places in there, Lauren. Don’t make me be the one to give you ideas. I don’t know the exact layout of the old man’s house, but if you want me to break in…”

“No, you can’t,” I said, shaking my head as if he could see me.
