Meeting an old friend

It took a lot to convince him to leave without tasting the food. He didn't seem ready to do that, telling me it was his job, and he didn't mind dying for it. But what of me? Did he think I would be glad to see someone die for my sake? Whatever gave him such a thought? The last thing I would be happy to hear was that, and I made him realize that.

I was aware my mates were only doing this to keep me safe, but that didn't mean I wanted that. Not at the expense of someone else's life. Similar to how precious I was to them, there was someone else with whom the guard was precious. They would mourn him while cursing whoever caused him to die untimely. And that would be me? Being alive while getting cursed didn't seem like something I was looking forward to.
