Zaylen looked taken aback as he couldn't figure out what the hell he had done.

"Because of me? How is this my fault?" he let out.

"You distracted me, Zaylen!" I shouted, my frustration boiling over. "I had him. I was right there, and you pulled me back."

Zaylen's face hardened, finally understanding what I was blaming him for. "Distracted you? I was trying to save you from running headlong into danger. Do you really think you could have taken James on your own?"

"I had to try!" I yelled back. "So much was on the line. Kiara's death still haunts me, and now Sara... I can't just stand by and do nothing."

Zaylen's eyes flashed with anger. "You can't be so reckless, Liana. Do you have any idea what could have happened if you went in alone? James is a vampire, not just some petty criminal. You wouldn't have stood a chance."

"Don't patronize me!" I shot back. "You think I don't know how dangerous he is? But standing here arguing with you won't solve anything. You should have trusted m
