“Okay, here goes,” I said, taking a deep breath and trying to make my words as clear and precise as possible. “There have been a series of attacks against us, and we don't know who is behind them. They have been happening for a while now, and they have been getting more and more serious.”

I watched Jake's face as he struggled to make sense of my words, his expression a mixture of confusion and concern. He seemed to be trying to put the pieces together, to understand what I was telling him.

“But what does that have to do with my dad?” he asked, his voice full of worry. I could tell he was desperate for answers, for more explanation of what was happening.

“Your dad went missing, and the guard on duty was killed,” I said, my voice shaky. “If it was a kidnapper, they would have sent you a ransom demand by now. And your dad doesn't have any enemies. Except me,” I said, my voice tinged with a hint of humor despite the seriousness of the situation.
