Shrapnel shake around us like dust on a road, and my breath hurts my throat. All the weight of the man on my body makes it little easier for air to enter my lungs.

“What’s going on? "I scream, but my voice doesn't sound louder than a whisper. The cacophony of bursts is too big for me not to be able to overdo it.

Hunter has his face next to my ear, and he doesn't need so much effort for me to be able to listen to him.

I would have snorted if despair didn't leave me so blocked for any reaction besides shrinking.
