I was startled; my mouth gaped open, intending to utter some words, but no words came. I could feel a large, unsettling lump in my throat.

"Uhmmm, nothing, your Majesty," I finally replied to his question, shaking my head vigorously as I watched him.

He could sense my fear; I knew he could. I didn't know if it was that or the fact that he was already weary of me that made him step back, tilting his head slightly to issue James a command.

"Take her to the chief maid, ask her to get her cleaned up and well-fed, then bring her to my office," he turned towards me, assessing me with his ocean blue eyes, "we need to know everything about her before deciding."
