19. The Nightmare

Chapter Nineteen

Maya's POV

Exhaustion washed over me, my body and mind craving rest after the intense events of the day. "I think I just want to lie down and sleep," I murmured, my voice a weary whisper.

But as I moved to approach the small bed in the corner of the room, Aaron's authoritative voice stopped me in my tracks. "No, Maya. You'll sleep on the rug."

I turned to look at him, confusion evident in my gaze. Surely, he was joking, wasn't he? I chuckled weakly, thinking it was a jest borne out of the surreal situation we found ourselves in.

His expression remained serious, resolute. "I mean it. Lie down on the rug. I'll take the bed ."

I blinked, taken aback by his unwavering determination. His words hung in the air, and it became clear that he wasn't joking at all.

He expected me to sleep on the floor while he took the bed. A mix of disbelief and frustration swirled within me. Hadn't we just weathered a storm together? Hadn't he just tended to my wound with care?
