Tossing and turning in my bed for three hours, the soft beeping of my mother’s heart monitor kept me awake, along with the thoughts that were swimming in my head.

The ball was in three days. In three days, my fear would be more of reality than fear. Brittany would take my place while I was still alive, all just because I was weak. Undeserving omega.

I sighed, seating up on my bed. The emotions roaring in my chest threatened to overwhelm me. The weight of my impending fate pressed down on my shoulders, and I couldn't shake the feeling of helplessness.

And sadness.

The room was dimly lit. The only illumination was the soft glow from my mother’s heart monitor. My mother laid sickly on the bed, her health getting worse and worse as the days went by.

I sighed again, brushing away the prickly feeling I get in my chest when I think of who she used to be.
