“Bloodbag?” Lucas said, glancing at me. His warm arm drew around my neck and he pulled me into his side. “You seem to misunderstand. This lovely little thing is my pet.”

“A pet?” The procuress seemed disappointed, but only for a moment before she returned to her previous, flirtatious manner. “You’re quite the tease. Next time, bring me something sweet to bite into. I’ll repay the favor.”

“Fair enough,” said Lucas, with that daring chuckle of his. His arm felt heavy around my shoulders, but his grip on me was tighter than necessary. Either he was committed to protecting me at all costs, or just very worried about losing his hands.

I understood his concern in a place like this. Given that vampires came to this place to let loose entirely, it probably wasn’t the safest place for a human to be roaming.

“I’m looking for Cotton Candy,” Lucas said. “I was referred by a friend. They say she’s the best in this place. Is she available this evening? Call it a…consultation.”
