Chapter 2

"Lani,Lani" a soft voice calls out to me. My eyes flutter open, I'm in a meadow, a beautiful colorfu, meadow. I pluck a lilly from the ground and bring it to my nose, it's sweet scent invades my nose.

"Lani, Lani." Only one person used to call me that. Val. My heart stops for a second.

I desperately look around to find her. "Val! Val!" I call out.

There's a pocket of silence for a minute before she calls out again. I quickly take to my feet and follow the voice. I spot a head full of red hair among the flowers not far from me. Feeling like my heart is about to leap out of my chest I approach it slowly, my feet grazing the rough shrubs and grass as I walk. When I'm inches away I extend a hand, "Val?" I call out and I hold my breath. Hoping and praying that it's her. She giggles and my heart swells with warmth, the sound pleasantly fills my ears. My eyes start to gather up tears.

"Go back Lani." That's the last thing I hear before the world goes black again. My eyes flutter open and are immediately met by a white ceiling, the beeps of hospital machines fill the room.

A dream, a coma maybe, but it wasn't real. I'm here and alive, she's not. The scent of disinfectant stings in the air. I try to call out to someone but my voice comes out as a faint whisper. It's as parched as a dessert. My lips are cracked and sore and my head is throbbing with pain. How did I get here? I pinch the bridge of my nose and try to recall. It all starts to fall into place, the explosions, the running and the screams, all of it. Who I was running with? Did he make it? Is he okey ? Dread fills me up. I hear the tapping of shoes approaching me, I struggle to sit up however a set of hands help steady me. The hands belong to a middle aged nurse, with a slender frame and the type of face that makes you feel safe.

"Good to see you're up sweetie, how are you feeling ?" I swallow a lump of saliva that does little to ease my dry throat noticing my thirst, she quickly helps me to a glass of water.

The water swiftly soothes my throat, I clear my throat and answer her question.

"I feel okey a little sore, uhm how did I get here?" She reaches over to check my IV bag from there she readjusts my pillow. "Oh sweetie you're blessed to be alive, it was all a horrific incident." She careful unwraps my head tossing aside the stained bandage into a little bin in the corner.

I wait for her to elaborate further irritation prickling through my skin. I want to know how I got here more importantly what happened to the person that brought me here.

"You've been out for three days, suffered a minor concussion. Your body just needed to rest up I guess." She looks up from her clipboard smiles at me and goes back to scribbling on it.

"What happened to the person I was with?" The room goes silent, my heart starts to beat faster. I hope he isn't dead, I wouldn't be here if it weren't for him. The machine besides me starts beeping fast, the nurse quickly places the clipboard on the table. "Hey hey calm down sweetie, he's okey." This nurse knew what she was doing with her dramatics, she could have mentioned everything without pausing for effect.

She let's out a light chuckle. She starts to wrap a bandage around my head. "He ran into the hospital with you in his arms, scratches and cuts all over him, covered in dust, bleeding , yet he held you tightly and demanded you get treated, he didn't move an inch until you were treated" she pauses and looks at me in the eyes before continuing. "It was a sight truly, he barked at the doctors to treat you."

My heart flutters.

The nurse finishes up wrapping my head and stands to the side. "He's been popping in whilst you were unconscious, he seems like quite the person, security detail follow him, and have been camped outside your room since you got in,you have good connections."

She winks and then chuckles and I chuckle awkwardly. People that move around with security detail do that with reason, because they have people waiting to lodge bullets in their heads. Either he's the president of the United States which I highly doubt, or he's and influential person in other ways. Because I'm a little high off meds I'll go with the president, I really don't have the mental capacity to think of other possibilities.

"Uhm where is he? Has he been here today?" I ask. The quicker I find him and thank him, the quicker I can put everything behind me and forget this whole ordeal. I do not want to be tangled up in trouble. Nope nope nope. I had my fair share of that in the past.

"He'll be in soon, I'm sure he'll be delighted to know you're awake. Anyways I'll call in the doctor now to give you your meds."

She smiles yet again before she scurries out the room. Maybe he did this as a thank you for stealing my parking space? No one's ever this nice. I feel myself start to get anxious. Will he want something in return for saving my life? Who is he ? Is he someone who knows my father ? No that can't be, it's been years I've lived a clean life, it just can't be. Just as my thoughts begin to form large piles in my head, the door opens and someone steps in.
