Chapter 2- Darkness Revealed

Samara’s POV

Darkness surrounds me as I slowly open up my eyes. The darkness surrounding me is the same shade as the darkness that greets me when I close my eyes, resulting in me questioning whether I even opened my eyes to begin with. A shiver of fear moves through my body, causing me to shake against the grimy floor as tears spring to my eyes, threatening to fall at any moment.

Where am I?

That thought keeps circling around in my mind while I struggle to get my eyes to adjust to the darkness of wherever I have found myself, but no matter how hard I concentrate, no light appears in my vision to assist me with seeing. The smell of rot and mold assaults my senses and I have to fight down the constant bile that threatens to release at any moment.

A whimpering sound breaks the silence from my left, drawing my head in that direction with a quick snap. My ears perk up to catch the sound again, but nothing greets me as I sit there straining to hear any sound in the darkness. Just when I was giving up and settling back against the cold, hard wall, the sound echoed around the dark room once again.

“Hello?” I ask into the darkness, kicking myself for being the dumb blonde that searches for the sounds in the horror movies. Nothing good ever comes from the blonde women that go in search of the eerie noises they hear in the horror films, and I am not interested in meeting my demise today.

I pull my legs up closer to my chest so I can wrap my arms around their exposed lengths and make myself smaller. My breath hitches in my throat as I wait anxiously to see if the whimpering sound will return or if whoever is in here with me will completely ignore the idiotic blonde that dared to say a word.

My body relaxes back against the cold wall in relief when there is no response to my question. Just as I settle myself as comfortably as I can on this damp floor, someone interrupts the quiet once again with a whispered “who is there?” My body stiffens at the sound of the young, feminine voice in the darkness.

A shuffling sound fills the silence that follows the feminine question, my fear taking hold of my tongue and not allowing me to respond to the young voice in the distance. The shuffling sound slowly makes its way closer to where I sit, curled up into a ball with my arms wrapped around myself for protection. Not that this position will offer me much protection from whatever is in here with me.

The shuffling sound grows closer by the second.

My heart hammers in my chest erratically, fear clutching at my body and keeping me locked into place where I sit. A rancid smell gets stronger the closer the shuffling gets to my place on the floor, the scent choking me as I struggle not to breathe in the terrible smell unsuccessfully. I slowly lift my hand to my face and pinch my nose shut with my fingers as I cover my mouth with the palm of my open hand.

The shuffling sound suddenly stops as a grinding noise replaces the sound. The shuffling grows louder and more hurried as it scurries back to whatever corner it came from, but not quick enough.

Blinding light fills the dark, damp space, burning my retinas with the sudden flash of light after being in complete darkness for so long. A massive form enters what appears to be a cell, blocking out most of the light flooding in and allowing me a chance to look around.  I vaguely make out the shape of a woman hidden in the far corner, her body curled up within itself to make her seem smaller.

The large form enters the dank space with determination in each step as he makes his way over to where I heard the scurrying sound wander off to moments ago. A familiar whimper fills the small space as the large man pulls a young woman from the damp floor by her hair, wrenching a cry from her lips.

“Shut your mouth.” The man growls down at her, his open mouth revealing what appears to be fangs, but is clearly just in my imagination because humans don’t have fangs. “One more sound out of you and you won’t make it upstairs.” An evil glint appears in the bald man’s eyes that are locked onto the young woman’s neck with pure lust.

Another whimper escapes the woman’s lips before her body goes limp in the man’s arms. Whether her sudden limpness is from submission or from passing out, I have no idea. The woman in the far corner meets my eyes for a moment before they quickly return to the large man and woman that is draped over his large, muscular arms as if she didn’t weigh a thing.

What in the hell is going on? And what have I gotten myself into now?

The large man gives one last look over his shoulder at where I sit, hidden in the shadows before he leaves the room and closes the door behind him, taking all of the light out with him. I blink my eyes rapidly in an attempt to fight off the darkness that consumes my vision once more. After a few failed attempts, I let out a resigned sigh and settle myself back against the cold wall, resting my head along the top of my knees.

“You are human, aren’t you?” A low voice says from across the darkness.

I pull my head from my knees slowly and turn my head in the direction where the sound came from, in the same direction that I remember seeing the young woman hiding in a small ball. I debated over whether I should answer the woman or not for a heartbeat, but in the end I decided that I am already trapped in this room with her so there is no harm in speaking with her. We are both in the same predicament afterall.

Once I had talked myself into responding to the quiet voice in the dark, her strange words finally settled in my brain, causing me to frown. My eyes widen in fear as I remember the sight of fangs stretching out from the large man’s mouth, my brain struggling to come up with a logical explanation for the sight.

The woman chuckles from across the room, her voice sounding harsh as it echoes around the room and fills me with dread. My rapidly beating heart becomes all too loud to my ears, making me fear that the sound will attract the large man and bring him back for me this time.

The sound of the woman’s laughter cuts off abruptly as the familiar sound of scurry enters my ears and grabs hold of my heart, giving it a tight squeeze. Fear oozes from my body as I listen to the sounds of the woman making her way closer to me by the second. In a matter of moments she will be right in front of me and I still haven’t figured out if she is a threat or not.

The woman’s scurry halts abruptly, a whispered curse leaving her lips as she moves closer to me at a quicker pace. The door swings open suddenly, blinding me once again as light floods the small room. The same, large man from before moves into the room, with a second large man close behind him.

I blink away the sudden blindness in time to catch sight of the woman that was making her way closer to me. Her face is turned towards me when I look up at her. An animalistic look is plastered on her face as she stares at me with longing, the whites of her eyes are a blood red color, and fangs can be seen clear as day protruding from her lips.

A growl erupts from her lips as she turns her head away from me and faces the two men that have entered our cell. My body stiffens in place, my eyes locked onto the fight ensuing in front of me as the small woman attacks the large man before getting dragged off of him by the second man.

The second man to enter the room throws a punch at the woman’s face, knocking her out in one blow before he lifts up her body and exits the room with her. The first man turns his gaze in my direction, hissing at me loudly with his fangs clear for me to see. “I will be back for you soon enough, my sweet.” He tells me before turning and exiting the room.

Fear grips me as my brain screams at me an explanation for what is going on, though I stubbornly ignore the evidence that lies before me.

There are no such things as Vampires.
