SEVENTY FIVE

At one o'clock in the morning Felix was startled by the sound of a bell being pressed repeatedly on the door. His eyes were still half closed. He groaned in annoyance at whoever was a lunatic who came this early to his boss's house. In the hall, Felix saw Ezra drinking brandy from a bottle. There was another empty bottle on the table and a half bowl of peanuts left. Ezra seemed indifferent to the sound of the bell being pressed many times and had no intention of opening the door for the madman.

“Who do you think is the madman who came this early?” Felix grunted as he passed Ezra.

“Probably someone who got lost. Throw him away if there is nothing important to do.”

“You shouldn't have driven your men home tonight. They are proving indispensable to dispelling this nuisance.”

“Don't complain too much, Felix. I pay you to open the door. They could be more useful elsewhere.”
