A Ruined Birthday Party

As Ava drove through the lonely roads, her mind went back to what transpired in the garage. She laughed and shook her head, she truly was crazy. How do you suddenly have feelings for a man you have never come across before.

She laughed happily while she drove slowly home. She just turned twenty-three today and she was a twin. She grew up with a loving family and she was the good one between her and her sister. Avery was the opposite of Ava, while Ava was quiet and peaceful, Avery was loud and always got into trouble. Their family was a small one consisting of their grandparents, their mom and the twins. They never had a father figure, he left after the twins were born.

Ava had always been the one who was contented with the little she had. They were poor but she was contented with it. Avery was the opposite, she ran after rich men and gave them her body just to have a taste of wealth even if it was just for a few weeks. They were always complaining about Avery and her hunger for wealth, she would do anything just to get a few bucks. She was desperate, rude and didn't have regards for anyone.

Ava stared at the contact the man had given her and she made a promise to call him when she got home.  Why was she acting this way? For a person she barely knew. She had never had a boyfriend but all of a sudden she's daring to do that which is impossible.

What if Mr. Nathan doesn't accept her? What if she gets rejected even before she makes a move? There's no harm in giving it a try.

  ...

When she got home, she met her family in the living room all waiting for her to come back home.

"Ava! Where have you been? We've been waiting for you. The guests got tired of waiting and left."

Her mother was angry and was yelling at the top of her voice disturbing the neighborhood.

Damnit! She had forgotten about the birthday party.

"Carolina calm down. Maybe she was stuck in traffic and.." her grandma who was quite supportive of her spoke on her behalf. Ava mouthed a thank you.

"Mama, don't tell me to calm down. She missed her birthday party, againnnnnn. Argh, I'm off to bed. Good night."

"Way to go Ava. You made my birthday party a disaster. I hate you."

Avery spoke angrily and stormed upstairs to her room. She just stood there weak in the knees and kept staring at the stairs.

"Don't worry about your mother, I will talk to her myself. Now, come give grandma a hug."

She embraced the old lady who was sitting on her wheel chair and exchanged pleasantries with the old man who unperturbed, was going through the newspaper in his hands.

"How was my daughter's day at work?"

"It was fine grandma. Alot of stuffs happened, guess who I ran into today at the grocery store?"

"Who? You know I'm not good at guessing."

The women's happy chattering was heard in the dark night.

A car parked outside and kept watch. He took out his cell phone and called his boss.

"Sir Nathan, yes. Yes she's home safely. Alright sir."

Nathan hanged up and took a sip of wine. He could still hear Ashley cries from the torture room in the mansion. She was disturbing everyone's sleep with her screams. Nelson was definitely enjoying it, this would serve as a lesson to other staffs.

He has been staring at his phone expecting a call from the young Miss at the garage but still there was no call. The moment his phone rang, he had jumped up immediately and reached out for it only to find out it was his chauffeur calling. He had asked him to follow Ava and make sure she got home safely. Why he had done that, he doesn't know but he feels drawn to her. There was this connection he felt when he threw a gaze her way and even though he didn't get a clear view of her face, he knew she was pretty.

Pretty? He was Nathan Lewis, he had seen more pretty girls but why does she affect him so much? Maybe because she looked innocent and..

Why was he explaining why he wanted her? Never had he felt this way for a woman he barely knows. He had never being in any serious relationship. He believed love doesn't exist at least not in this part of the world. His first love broke him and left him with a scar which never healed. He still thinks of her every single day and that alone motivated him to work harder so that no woman would be able to talk at him like he was nothing.

He met Caryn in college and they got along quite well. They became the best of friends and it was obvious they were into each other. Nathan was the shy one and he couldn't bring his self to tell her he wanted them to be more than friends. Besides he was poor, his mother could barely afford his fees. Caryn came from a very wealthy family and the few times he had been to their house, her parents made it clear he wasn't the type of man they would want for their daughter. He wasn't their daughter's class.

'Now who isn't your class Caryn? Definitely not me.'

He was right. She was definitely not his class at the moment because her family went bankrupt few years ago and came begging him to give them a loan. He sent them away reminding them the exact words they said.

"You are not her class, Nathan."

He has been restless since then, he thought his success would bring happiness but he still thinks of her. She has been trying to come back into his life but he turned her down several times. He's been a playboy ever since. He just dates for the fun of it, not cause he's interested in the person. Besides all this girls want is his money, and that's why he resorted to contract relationship. He spends on you whenever you're out with him but he never gives you money. He made an exception with Camille's case, he had to pay her off.

The cold, lonely, ruthless Nathan Lewis. He laid in bed and closed his eyes whispering "goodnight Caryn, wherever you are. I'm sorry I couldn't help you. I'm still bitter about what your family did to us."
