Chapter 35

Gwen's POV

My eyes welled up with tears that I could not stop. I never had imagined that my birthday would turn out to be one of the worst days of my life.

"Are you okay, Gwen?" my grandmother asked, extending her hands to me for support.

I was unsure of the answer to give her. How could one be okay if they had just lost someone close to their heart?

"We will arrive in New York within the next two hours," the captain announced.

I tightly shut my eyes closed, and memories of my mother flooded back.

I remembered being in third grade and having to cast the role of Rapunzel in a play. I was so nervous and scared, but she lifted my spirits and gave me confidence.

She promised to take me to Disneyland if I said all my lines correctly which she did.

How she rewarded me with my first pet goldfish for being the best student in fourth grade.
