Saved, For Now

Emily sits there thinking, saying nothing for the longest time, and when one of the men clears his throat, she raises her head and looks at them all.

"I am not ready to take on such a huge responsibility."

The old men scowl in unison, except one of them who has a kind and understanding look on his face.

"Any reason in particular?"

She is too young. She is inexperienced. She is afraid of screwing up and being laughed at. She doesn't know the first thing about being an Alpha. A thousand reasons, all of which she is not willing to name.

"I guess...I I am comfortable just like this."

"Well," says the meanest Elder, "You did not come here to be comfortable. You came here to do your duty, a duty your father left for you."

"I really don't understand. Why don't you people just let Alpha Marcus carry on with the job? He's been doing a great job for years." she gives a little shrug, an almost helpless expression on her face.
