Chapter 39

I huddled at the freezing cage's far end. My entire body is in excruciating pain. The wounds inflicted on me stung like my body had been attacked by a swarm of ants. I bit my lower lip hard to keep the pain at bay and the heat from my insides at bay.

Taking deep breaths, I attempted to regain my footing but failed miserably, collapsing to the cold, hard stone.

"Amelia.." Someone called my name. Tara, my cellmate who was also locked up in the cage with me, spoke to me in a familiar voice.

She stretched out and tried to push me up, but I refused.

"Wake up, Amelia!" She screamed angrily, taking care not to touch my injuries and open them up for the second time.

"Keep your voices down!" Outside the cage, a guard yelled, and h e whipped the bars constantly to keep our voices quiet.

"She's ill!" Tara cried out "She's burning up, and she will be dead soon if you do not help her!"

"And do you think I care less if she lives or dies?" The guard made a nasty remark "Every day, slaves die in here
