The next morning, when I awoke, I was all by myself in my own bed. Because I had been accustomed to having Chris splayed down next me or tucked into the small of my back, it took me a second to recall the reason why I was by myself.

I realized that I was getting out of bed as quickly as I could after I had gotten up. The desire to once more be in Chris's company was insurmountably difficult to resist. I had washed my face, gotten dressed, and was on my way to the kitchen in less than ten minutes.

I entered the kitchen via the doorway to find a father and daughter attempting to make pancakes together. I joined them in their endeavor.

They exclaimed in unison, "Kaili!" as identical grins of delight spread across their faces as they did so.

"I hope your morning goes well, Burroughs. Have a good night?"

Avery retorted with courtesy, "Yes, thank you," as she skillfully flipped a pancake with a flick of her wrist. "I appreciate that."
