53: Kingdom of Nirvana

The sun was high up in the sky when Kalista slowed to a stop and collapsed beneath a large oak tree.

She heaved for breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly. She had been on the run the moment the mist took her out of the village.

The incident of the past few hours played back in her mind's eye. After she took the rune from Salem, she then made her way to the temple first. She needed to see Jade one last time before leaving.

The temple was empty when she stepped in. The witches had all left and a healing poultice was placed beside Jade's head, but Kalista knew it wouldn't heal him completely. Her heart broke all over again when she stood beside him amd gently took his hand in hers. His brows were knitted in discomfort and his breath came out faintly.

"Oh Jade," she whispered, tears falling from her eyes. "This is all my fault. I wish... I wish I never told you to mark me. You wouldn't have been hurt." She sniffed and continued. "That is why I have to do this. I can't sit back,
