Axel walks in front of me with his head down. I can see the silver already acting quickly as it rubs away at his exposed skin. I have tried to reach out through our mind link a few times as we head for the vehicles that are waiting for us, but he refuses to acknowledge my efforts. It hurts more than I thought it would, betraying the first person you love.
“So he is your mate?” The man called Liam asks me.
I just look at him sideways and scoff as we all trudge forward. Nothing about this feels right. I long to be back in that bed with him, learning more about each other on a level that goes deeper than a lie. He had trusted me enough to tell me his one secret. Liam, Axel, and I trudge up the stairs to our room and push the door open. The musty smell of the room is pungent and I crinkle my nose, surveying the rest of the room. *Axel*Maggie’s screaming rips through my silent defenses, and I’m compelled to fling myself to her side. I have to blink furiously to clear my eyes of the nightmare I am clearly witnessing, only to find that it’s all very real. Liam watches in horror as Maggie thrashes around, gurgling out sobs of pain. Brutus dumps me out of the chair with a loud thud as I land on my side, too broken to move or make a sound.
