ColeA ‘Sold’ sign had appeared outside Highfield Hall less than a week after I had nearly been caught trespassing, and then just a couple of weeks later it became alive with a swarm of activity. There were diggers and bulldozers, cranes and cement mixers, and lots of other machinery that I didn’t even know the name of.It broke my heart a little to see my peaceful haven being so disrupted.I peered daily over the wall, to see what they were doing, but I never ventured inside. As time passed, the warning my dad gave me seemed to diminish in significance, as many threats from parents do, but I knew I would have to have a death wish to go into the grounds while there was so much work going on.Two months later, and most of the external work on the Hall had been completed, and they were now working on the inside. The heavy machinery had gone, and in its place was a renovated building that had been brought back to life, back to its former glory. As much as I resented the intrusion, I coul
Nathan“FUCK IT!” I roared, while smashing the shit out of an old wooden dining chair.“Oh, I hope that wasn’t an antique,” came an annoyingly prissy voice from behind me.“I hope it fucking was,” I growled back.I looked over at Ronan and shot him my best warning glare.“Now, now, my little brooding beast, you know that ‘this’” he said waving his arms towards me, with his nose in the air, “is not my, nor that chair’s fault.”“Then who’s fucking fault is it then? Because I’m just looking to smash someone’s face in right now.”“Then go find a mirror you dumb prick!” Ronan snapped back, clearly losing patience with my insolent behaviour.I couldn’t trust my mouth or my fists, so I stormed straight out of the room, bumping Ronan’s shoulder on the way out.I kept going at a military pace until I was deep in the woods, then I changed into my wolf and ran. I knew I couldn’t run far like this in broad daylight, so I ran fast and hard, pounding out my frustration in a huge burst of adrenalin
Cole“What’s for tea Dad?” I asked, after my stomach had growled for like the fiftieth time.“Oh, did I not say?” he replied, “Miranda’s coming over with takeout. I told her to get you a Jalfrezi, is that ok?”“Oh, great!” I said enthusiastically. Who doesn’’t love a takeaway curry?“Oh, and Miranda’s son is also coming.”I frowned while trying to remember if I had ever heard of their being a son. Nope, I was pretty sure I hadn’t heard him mentioned before.“She has a son?” I asked.“Yes, he lived with his dad, but please don’t mention anything about it will you?”“I’m not stupid!” I reminded my dad. It wasn’t so much that I wasn’t stupid, more that I would avoid any socially awkward conversations at all cost.Even if he did live with his dad, I still found it odd that he had never come up in conversation before.“How old is he?” I asked.“Erm, about your age I think, or maybe a little older.”“Have you met him before?” I asked.“Yes, briefly, he’s going to be working on one of m
Joel“Happy birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Joel, Happy Birthday to you.”I pulled the covers down from over my head and smiled at my mum who was stood in the doorway holding a birthday cake.“It’s a bit early for cake isn’t it?” I said with a smile.“It’s never to early for cake!” my mum said in all seriousness.I chuckled as she came over and placed the cake on my bedside table.“I’ve got plates!” she said, proudly pulling out a pair of paper plates from the front pocket of her apron.“Wow, you’ve thought of everything,” I mocked in good humour.“Well, it’s been such a long time since I’ve been able to share my son’s birthday cake, that I couldn’t wait a second longer. Plus you need to get up to get ready for work.”“Oh yeah...work.” I grumbled. The last time I went to work, it was at Blackwood manor. With Casper.I felt my mood take a nosedive as I thought about home.“Here you go,” my mum said, holding out a piece of cake.I quickly hid my frown and
ColeThe summer holiday was finally over and I was in my last year of college. After that one arranged day with Annabell, I never went back to Highfield Hall. Well, that was a bit of a lie. I did go there, but I never snuck into the grounds.I was too afraid.I’d walked the boundary of the land that belonged to the Hall and took several glances over the wall, in the hope to see those big dogs again.Every now and again I would get a glimpse of them running in the grounds. The more I saw them, the more I became convinced that they were not dogs. They were definitely wolves. It became quite addictive, trying to spot them. And I noticed that there were more of them than I originally thought. I began to document some of the different features and markings on the animals, and I had definitely seen at least 8 different individuals. There was one in particular that caught my eye. It was a large dark brown wolf that had a streak of silver running from the tip of one ear to it’s shoulder.
NathanI didn’t want to be here. Every fibre of my being was screaming at me to leave.Well, actually, that wasn’t quite true. My heart was screaming for me to stay, but every other part of me just wanted to get as far away as possible.I hated Ronan and his big idea. I knew Cole would be here. I just knew it. Why wouldn’t he listen to me?!The moment I entered into the lecture theatre I could sense him in the room. And before long, I caught his scent. That was the thing about mates. You became highly attuned to their scent meaning you could pick it out easily among a group of people, and from a distance too.God he smelled good. Like the forest just after a heavy downpour.I forced myself to breathe through my mouth to not be drawn in by it any further.I needed to look at the silver lining here. Ronan had said that if Cole got involved, I could pass the project onto someone else. And it’s not like I wanted to do this in the first place. Why would I want to have to make conve
Cole“P to the A to the R T Y - It’s PARTY TIME! Whoop Whooop!”I swear there was something medically wrong with her sometimes.“My god girl, you’ve not even had a drink yet!” I said to Natalie as we walked up the street where the party was being held.“That’s what you think,” she said with an overly exaggerated wink.“Oh man, I’m going to be carrying you out of here tonight, aren’t I?” I said with a groan.“Hey, just think of it as payback for last time,” she said with a mischievous glint in her eye.Ah, I guess she had a point there.I looked up at the house that was now infront of us. It was a large detached stone house, with a huge drive, lined by immaculately pruned conifer trees. I could never quite get my head around how people managed to have parties in homes like these. Where were the parents? Surely they couldn’t know what was going on. The damage alone from a party like this would probably cost hundreds if not thousands to put right. As if someone could read my mind, th
ColeOne second Percy was next to me, the next he was gone, and the only clue I had as to where he had gone were the screams now coming from behind me.I slowly turned round and gaped at what I saw. In just a few seconds the whole room seemed to be full of brawling bodies. I saw fists flying, and heard glass smashing, and everywhere I looked I could see bruises and cuts appearing on people’s faces.I wanted to run. I needed to run. But something kept me rooted to the spot. I needed to know that Natalie and Percy were alright.I couldn’t see either of them in the chaos in front of me, but I knew I would have to move if I wanted to find them.Slowly I edged my way into the mass of bodies. Ducking a flying chair and leaping over a pair wrestling on the floor, I eventually spotted Natalie cowering behind an armchair.I quickly dove behind the chair next to her.“Come one, we need to get out of here,” I said.I turned to look at Natalie and I could see the tears beginning to fall down
