“I have been traveling a lot. We have been locked down in negotiations on several matters. I really wanted to call.”
“What about the other woman?”
Kai scoffed and shook his head. “There is nothing going on there. What about James Reese?”
“You actually know all the guests?”
“I saw the guest list and figured out who he was when I saw someone suspiciously familiar beside him,” he replied quickly as if the information was inconsequential. “You two seem… to be having a good time together. Is this an overnight thing or…”
“Oh no. It’s not like that.”
“I’m not sure about that. He treats you very affectionately.” His voice was cutting, hurt even.
“He’s more interested in you than me,” I said blandly.
“What?” he asked, incredulous.
“It’s not common knowledge. Don’t tell anyone. I’ve come to keep people off his back.”
“Oh. I don’t know the guy so it doesn’t mean anything to me. Although…” He looked down at his hand

Seeing them down, he then reached under the bench and pulled out two comfortable-looking stools for us to sit on. He returned to the fridge and brought out a bottle of wine and my mouth dried as I watched his hands as they deftly maneuvered the corkscrew and released it.
