“Mr. Rivera,” James said in a voice full of admiration. He shook Kai’s hand. “You have a great turn-out tonight.”
“Ah, you’re Mr. Reese, the famous painter,” Kai replied.
My heart jumped in my chest at his voice. It was smooth and all. I had thought I had forgotten it. He continued to speak in a diplomatic voice. “Thank you for attending. Your support means a lot to us.”
Despite my nerves, I smiled to myself, staring at the wine glass. It had a heavy price tag. High society was strange.
“You have my full support, Mr. Rivera,” James acknowledged. Kai introduced the woman beside him while James made all the right replies, fawning and gushing. He finally recovered enough to remember me.
“May I introduce you to my date for the night?”
I could hear a hint of pride in his voice. I might not have been a supermodel or something, but that made me feel better about myself.
I looked up finally and looked into Kai’s waiting eyes.

I did look okay, though a little flushed. The ballroom was only half full when I arrived. I made my way back to the table and found a drunk James waiting for me. “Sure,” I mumbled as I followed along. He led me to an open jeep. It didn’t look official or fancy, which was good. But it was not what I was expecting.
