Hailey glanced up at the wall clock for the umpteenth time that afternoon and like several times before that, she sighed. Time was running quite slow in this particular shift. It was a friday and so they didn't have much customers. Not that the cafe had much that of anyway. They had enough patronage to keep the place afloat and functioning but not enough for expansion and renovations that the place was in dire need of. Things had been like that long before she started working here. Nothing changes in this town, she thought. The same people, the same sights, the same vices and habits.
Silver creek was a small town that held little attractions apart from the creek from which the name had been derived from. The creek was full of intriguing aquatic life and did attract it's fair share of tourists. The town was a veering off a major highway and so there was also a fair amount of travellers and truckers. Apart from that, the town was just an ordinary place with little or nothing to do. It was also the town Hailey Brookes had lived in all of her life. Most of it, if she was being factual. She couldn't say she really loved the town but she was used to it. Nothing exciting or fun ever happened here not that she went out of her way to find it though. Today was different however. She had a date with Brandon and it seemed like the most interesting that had happened to her all year. Brandon was a nice guy who lived down the road from her own house. He had always found a way to be around Hailey. When she had returned from college,he made it a point of duty to show up at least once a week. After her Nana died, Brandon came around more frequently with the pretext of helping out with the odd jobs around the house. It was so obvious that he had a thing for her. Finally, he grew enough balls to ask her out on a date.
She looked at the clock again and wished she could will it to move faster. She didn't want to be late on her first date although she knew Brandon was an easy going guy and he would understand if she was.
"What's on your mind girl?",a singsong voice broke into her deep thoughts. She turned to see Peggy. A plump round faced girl with the friendliest of smiles. Her head was poking out from the window that demarcated their workspace. Peggy was the one in charge of the cash register. She was also the only person Hailey talked to in the cafe. Scratch that. She was the only real friend Hailey had in silver creek. Hailey had never been much of a social person. She had gone through her four years in college without even having a friendship progress through to the final stages of acquaintanceship.
"Umm, i need to go home"
Peggy made an incredulous face. It was obviously a topic they had discussed several times.
"To do what? Eat some junk and then sleep off while bingeing those boring documentaries?
"You make it sound like it's not fun".
"It is not. Girl, you need to get a life !"
The statement brought a smile to Hailey's face. It wasn't the first time she was hearing that.
"Well,i actually have other plans for tonight".
"A new snack to add to your list or what?"
"Peggy Turner can you shut up for just a minute please?", Hailey said with a laugh.
"Okay", her friend replied with an eye roll. She then drew two fingers across her lips imitating a zip. Hailey just shook her head and gave an exasperated sigh.
"Well, i have a date".
Peggy's eyes grew round as saucers and she stared at Hailey as if she had just sprouted wings.
"Did you just say that you have a date?", She asked.
"I believe i did".
Peggy shrieked, her right hand punching into the air. "Wow!! a date finally."
"It's just a friendly date, don't get too weird about it".
"First off, there's no such thing as a friendly date and secondly i'm most definitely getting weird about it."
She ignored Hailey's dramatic eye roll and continued "Like when last did you go on a date?"
"Wow, harsh", Hailey said, clutching her chest at about the position of her heart and faking a pained look.
"It's the truth sweetie and you know it".
"Anyways, this date...." Peggy didn't get to finish her statement as someone dumped a stack of trays on the counter and asked "Who's going on a date?"
They both cursed quietly. Ruby from the kitchen was an annoying busybody who had a knack for making herself at home in the one place she wasn't wanted. She also had a flair for delving into people's private conversations. Just like right now.
"C'mon, ladies spill", She pressed on. She drew the trays laid two bejewelled hands on the counter. As usual, she smelled of some cheap perfume and had applied way too much make up. Ruby of any given day, Hailey thought.
Ruby gave the pair an irritated look.
"What's with you two?"
Hailey and Peggy exchanged uneasy glances.
"Well',Peggy started, 'Hailey here's got a date this evening".
"Really?", Ruby exclaimed giving her an incredulous look.
Not wanting to be part of the conversation, Hailey merely nodded and busied herself with arranging glasses and menus.
"Well,i hope he's handsome,i like my men handsome and a tad roguish. You know the more roguish, the more good they are in the sack." This last part was accompanied by a throaty laugh that only her shared. Briefly, Hailey wondered if the bunch of truckers that Ruby consorted with regularly were included in that category.
"So,are you gonna let him hit it today?"
Hailey heard Peggy's stifled groan even as she let out a sigh. Ruby had no concept of boundaries whatsoever. She thought of a plausible, civil answer to her question other than the go to hell at the tip of her tongue. Her thoughts were however interrupted by a loud whistle from Ruby. What was wrong with her ? She looked up to see that Ruby had turned and was watching something or someone with interest. She followed Ruby's gaze and what she saw made her swallow hard. Making his way towards them was a total hunk. As he got closer, she thought he looked like one of those greek gods come to life.
"Now that's what am talking about, my type of Man", Ruby said conspiratorially. Peggy let out a frustrated sigh but all these were lost on Hailey.
She felt as if she was in some kind of trance. She had locked eyes with him and had been drawn in by a force that wouldn't break off. Not that she wanted to. There was something about him that made her want to run into the strong arms that flexed beneath the top he wore. She would give anything to be cradled by those arms. And yet, at the same time she felt like running far away from him. There was something about him that spelt trouble and danger boldly. Something that that said he was definitely going to be a handful. Hailey felt herself toss and turn in the whirlpool of those two emotions."Hey,excuse me", the hunk said rapping a finger on the counter. Hailey gasped. Lost in her thoughts, she hadn't realized that he was right in front of her."Sorry....i....i....didn't know...," her words came out in a stutter."It's okay", he said and flashed her a reassuring smile. His smile was the type that could make a woman all buttery inside. A smile that would make many a woman drool.
Trey watched her sleep and wondered how someone could look so adorable in their sleep. She looked so peaceful. This was a far cry from some hours ago when she had cried out in her sleep. The attack from the Leviathan had probably made its way into her dreams turning them to nightmares. She had tossed and flailed on the bed screaming. He’d to hold her down before she hurt herself. It had taken some minutes before he could soothe her and she finally went back to sleep. He had returned to his position on the chair after. From where he sat, he had a good view of the path leading up to the entrance and if he stretched a bit forward, he could see most of the backyard. Trey didn’t want anybody sneaking up on him. He was certain no one had followed him to the motel but one could never be too sure and he couldn’t afford to make mistakes. Not now. The ones he had made already were still haunting him and the scars they had left etched deeply into his skin. He stood up to check if he could see an
He didn’t even flinch or move at the mention of Cops. He probably anticipated her going down this path. She looked around for her cell phone but it was nowhere to be seen. She was pretty sure he had it. The landline that was normally left on the bedside wasn’t there too and she realized there was no other option. The sly smile on his face made her know he was aware of her situation. Annoying bastard, she thought.“You know, I have people who will be looking for me….my friends”. It was a desperate last attempt to rattle him. He raised an eyebrow at what she had just said, maybe she was getting through to him. Finally .“Yeah….i have a friend who’s probably gone to the police by now, a boss waiting for me to clock in for today’s shift and shit…I stood up my date.” Hailey had totally forgotten about Brandon. She had been unable to come to the date and now it’d seem like she was intentionally ignoring his calls and messages. She was pretty sure he’d have called and texted a million times.
After dealing with the dude outside, Trey stepped back into the house. The dude, Brandon or something still bothered him but he was pretty sure they would be long gone before he grew enough balls to call the police. At the moment, he was still fuming over the fact that someone else was contending for Hailey’s love. He was so into Hailey it felt sick. Trey wondered why it disgusted him so much, it wasn’t like he was vying for a role in Hailey’s life. The whole thing was just a duty he was bound to fulfill and nothing more. Then Trey noticed it, the absolute stillness of the house. There was nobody else in here with him.“Fuck!!”He went through the rooms and then found the one she had jumped through it’s window. He knew her scent and tracking her wouldn’t be an issue. He just hoped he wouldn’t be too late. He dashed out of the house, running past a bewildered Brandon. The dude wouldn’t even have a clue, he thought. As he followed the scent through the neighboring yard, he thought about
The monster that killed Peggy was approaching her. She saw a hideous smile on the part of his face illuminated by the flashlight. A smile that said he was enjoying himself. He walked slowly and surely towards her. He ran his claws along the tiled Kitchen top, creating a grating sound. Hailey willed her body to move but it wouldn’t, it seemed like death or whatever that was about to happen was inevitable. It was what fate had in stock for her. He was a few steps from her and already reaching out for her when it happened. Suddenly, there was more shattering of glass and then a loud growl. The monster turned and gave a short laugh. If something that hoarse could be termed a laugh. “I was expecting you, Wolf boy”. From behind him, Hailey saw the outline of a man in the dark. The fallen flashlight wasn’t tipped towards him but Hailey knew it was Trey Kristov. His eyes glowed like the monster before her, although his was a light shade of blue. Didn’t he deny having anything to do with them
The car pulled around and then parked. Hailey stood there bathed in the blinding glare of the headlamps. She shielded her eyes trying to see what exactly was happening. She feared it was the Russian who had killed Peggy coming back to finish her off. If it was him, she didn't think they was strength left in her to run anymore. Her body was at a point beyond exhaustion. So, against her better judgement, she just stood there waiting. Waiting for whatever or whoever was coming. The car door opened and someone stepped out with the engine left running. The person seemed to be focused on her and she couldn't even see his face. She just knew he was masculine from the boots she could make out but it somehow occurred to her that it wasn't the Russian. At least that was something. She did however wonder who was the latest addition to the freak show that was her life. Hailey was at loss of what to do next when he started walking towards. An undescribable feeling caused her to shudder and she gra
Hailey woke up to the sound of car horns and to hear Ryan cursing. Apparently, a car had overtaken him in a way he didn't approve of. She watched him swear through clenched teeth that released a couple of unsavoury and vulgar words. He might have noticed her staring as he turned to look at her. "Hey there, sleepy head", he said with a bright smile. The other person who had been cursing and swearing was gone in an instant. The man was quite a specimen. "Did you sleep okay?" "Yeah", Hailey barely mumbled out. Now that it was morning, she could see his features more clearly. He had sky blue eyes that crinkled when he smiled. The long hair looked unkept but had a sheen to it. His sideburns also were untrimmed as were the hairs beneath his jaw. He had a scar running from the line of his jaw onto his neck. He was an attractive man, Hailey thought, although an unkept one. "So, what do you think?". Ryan's voice broke into her thoughts without warning. "Think of what?", She asked wonderin
Hailey felt like apologizing for having asked that question but on second thoughts decided it was best to not mention it again. No need poking in a sore spot. "So, the wolves live in packs just like the movies right?", she asked. Ryan was quiet for the better part of a minute, obviously considering whether to continue the conversation or just ignore her. Eventually, he made up his mind and replied with a monosyllable."Yeah""Cool. Like how many are there?"He laughed all of a sudden. Was her question that stupid? But at least he was laughing and maybe that was a good thing. Was the question that dumb?” She eventually asked him.“Not really, He said still laughing, given that you don’t know much about the Supernatural World.”Hailey just nodded, his reassurance having the opposite effect of making her feel incredibly stupid. She didn’t know what let him on but Ryan seemed to know how she felt and tried to make up for it. He launched into an essay trying to explain why he laughed.
