I know it might seem strange, but I’ve never had a slumber party before.Nyx and Link spend the first two hours hanging out in my room watching scary movies on Nyx’s new laptop. She was very surprised to find out it had all the streaming services, which seemed really strange to me. It is, after all, her computer, right? Should she know what she has and does not have on her own computer?“It was given to me by a mysterious new friend,” she admits a bit cryptically. “I don’t know who but…I…”Just as she is about to say more, her computer beeps. Simultaneously her phone beeps as well. She takes a quick look at her phone and her face becomes very pale.“Nyx, is anything wrong?” she looks at her compute
[Lily]“Please…” Atticus begs. “Just, meet me in the library in 30 minutes, okay.”“Why,” I try to hold my head up a little higher as I take a prouder stance, squaring my shoulders and giving him a cold, hard stare. “Why should I?”“Because…” he takes a hesitant step forward as if whatever is happening between him and Evie in the next room has him tethered in place. If it weren't for his missing jacket and lipstick-stained t-shirt, I may be moved to sympathy. “Because you are my friend.”"Am I?" I wonder aloud. Evie calls his name and Atticus' head snaps back in her direction. “Please,” he pleads, looking torn. “Just please trust me.”I nod even though I'm not sure that trust is something I can give him right now. My heart is so heavy I feel its weight dragging me down. I’m not sure that I can manage any time alone with him. The last few times we've been alone he has kissed me. The first time it was forceful full of anger and pain. He was using me to work through his feelings, and
[Lily] After Nyx and I said goodbye to Link, the next week went by without much fanfare. I was still living on the Legacy floor, but I had almost no interaction with the other Legacies outside basic greetings and the occasional breakfast. Nyx and I had returned to our old routines of eating breakfast together and meeting under the walnut tree after classes to discuss our day. Evie had become less aggressive towards me, but only by a small measure. If she had forgotten that she hated me that quickly, it would have been suspicious. The main difference was between me and Atticus. He and I had stopped talking. He could barely look at me. The only time he said more than two words to me was when his doctor came to remove the cast. And then, as soon as it was over, he went back to pretending not to know me. He had gone so far out of his way to put his neck out for Nyx, to help us execute this plan to bring her back, only to rush back into Evie’s arms and far away from me. Which I guess
[Lily]Nyx and Madison have been fussing with me non-stop. In their attempts to make me feel “desirable” and “pretty,” I just feel like one of those cosmetology mannequins, the ones they use in beauty school to practice makeup. I tried to convince them that I knew how to dress myself and put on my own makeup, but neither girl would take me seriously. Nyx snorted. Madison laughed. Neither one of them would leave me to my own devices. “Nothing personal,” Madison says over her shoulder as she raids my closet. “But you have the style of a blind middle-schooler.”Ever notice how whenever someone says “nothing personal” they are always about to say something extremely hurtful? I expected Nyx to defend me, but she and Madison have formed some type of weird connection over making me “glow up”. Best pals in fashion. I reminded her that Madison St.Claire is a Legacy, just like the rest of them, but she rolled her eyes and responded with “Whatever she is, she knows what she is doing. You shoul
[Atticus]Next time I get him alone, I'm going to kill Simon. As soon as Liliana sipped that drink I knew it would be too much for her. And then she took another sip and another. By the time Madison declared her ready, she was barely able to stand. Rather than keep her safe, like he promised to do, he leads her to the center of the dance floor next to that aggressive group of college jocks. As she begins to move gracefully to the music, their eyes are all watching, imagining what she must look like with no clothes on at all.My teeth grind into one another as she continues to move like there is nobody else in the world but her and the music. She is so damn hot. I want to pull her close and feel all of her pressed against me as I place my hand under her skirt and..."Atticus," Evie wraps her arms around me. "Let's dance.""Later," I grumble, not wanting to take my eyes off Liliana as she makes her way into the crowd. It would be too easy to lose her and I don't trust her alone in t
[Lily]Someone is holding me in a cold shower, rocking me back and forth as he says my name over and over again. “Stay with me, Liliana. Stay.”I cannot stay as he asks me to. I can’t think. I can’t feel. My whole body is numb.He holds me as I vomit all over myself and start crying in unexpected relief.“Tell her to drink this,” a hand reaches into the shower and a cup of something salty and sweet is placed against my lips.“She’s passing out again, doc!” He shouts as my body starts to grow heavy.“Get her out of the tub!” I hear as my world fades away. “We need to get her hooked up to an IV.”I am lifted and wrapped in a dry clean towel. Gentle hands place me on a warm, soft bed. There is a sharp pinch on my right arm and I drift off to sleep. I do not dream, but my last thoughts are of Atticus holding me as I drift off, his arms pr
[Lily] My mother said she loved me, but then she died when I was 13 and left my care to the devil. I'm supposed to call him "grandfather" but "devil" suits him better. Grandfathers are supposed to be compassionate and kind but Andrew Adare doesn’t understand the concept of kindness. I didn’t even know he existed, or that my real last name was “Adare” until he came to me at my mother’s funeral and claimed to be my family. He didn’t even give me a chance to say goodbye to my friends or my old life, I wasn’t even allowed to take a single memory with me. He just swept me off in his private jet, and as soon as he could, shipped me off with little explanation. “You look so much like her,” was all that he said to me. The only words that I heard from his mouth before disappearing and leaving me to the care of nannies and cooks and butlers. I don’t know why he bothered to take me if he doesn’t really want me. He hates me so much that he can't wait to get rid of me. As soon as summer ends
[Lily] “Hello Ms. Adare,” he purrs, his smile growing sickly sweet as he grins almost too brightly. He must be up to something because he’s a little too happy to have me in his arms. “I’m so glad to have run into you this morning.” He looks back at the other Legacies who nod in agreement, except for Evie Carter, Atticus’ girlfriend, who is staring daggers at me, her face growing red with repressed rage. Bending down low, he places his lips on my ear as he brings me in closer as if what he has to say is a secret between the two of us. Wrapped in his arms it feels too intimate as he murmurs, “We have much to discuss. I hope you will join us for breakfast.” My body freezes. Breakfast? Did he just invite me to dine with him, and the Legacy Seven? I must be mistaken. “Meet me at the stairs tomorrow at 8 am sharp,” he instructs me quietly yet firmly as if I have already agreed to this arrangement and he is just seeking confirmation. “I’ll expect to see you waiting for us at the base o
