Chapter 4: Moving In

Before she could get out of the mansion, another man in a suit stopped her and delivered her an envelope with the contract inside. She assumed he was a lawyer, but she couldn't be sure. She used the journey back home to read the document inside the cab. It was very detailed, but Sarah could understand everything, thankfully.

She went straight home to tell her grandmother the good news. Nana was overjoyed, although Sarah could feel that she was a bit sad inside.

"I'll visit you on my days off, Nana," she explained.

Mr. Reed was going to give her one day off per week, so she was going to be able to visit her grandmother. She also took the time to search for some nursing homes nearby, and she found one that looked incredible.

They offered everything Nana needed and more, and Sarah could afford it with her salary now. Mr. Reed was actually being very generous with his nannies. She thought that she could even make some financial reserve and have some money by the end of the month, something that almost never happened.

"Of course, my dear. Don't worry about me. I'm very happy that you found a good job. It must be better than serving coffee to rude strangers every day."

Sarah smiled, not having the guts to tell her grandmother that her new boss was even ruder than the customers she was used to serving. It was better to keep the bad parts from her.

"Ok, Nana. Time to go. I have to get my things ready, hand over my resignation at the coffee shop and take my things to the mansion. So let's get going."

They were going to visit the nursing home and see if her grandma would like it. Sarah was only going to take her to a place where she could feel comfortable, at home.

And fortunately, Nana loved it. She was in awe actually. Seeing so many people around with the same age, so many activities to do during the day, doctors at her service all day long; it was paradise.

The only thing she was going to miss was her granddaughter, but Sarah was working most of the time anyway, so she would get used to it very quickly.

"Did you really like it, Nana?" Sarah asked, still unsure about leaving her alone for the first time.

"Dear, look around. How could I not like it? It's almost a five-star resort. Thank you so much, dear."

"You deserve even more, Nana. I wish I could give you the world."

"Don't say nonsense. You're giving me a lot already. But don't think that this takes away your duty to come to visit me."

Sarah hugged her and they continued to do their tour around the place.

After packing everything and talking to her boss at the coffee shop, Sarah took her grandmother to the nursing home officially and proceeded to the mansion with her luggage.

She didn't have a lot of things or clothes, so it was easy to do everything on her own. She left a few things in the apartment, because she decided not to rent it before she was certain that the job would work out.

"Good morning, Miss Johnson," Carter said opening the door, with a very bright butler smile.

"Hi, Carter. Please, call me Sarah," she replied, following the man inside.

He showed her around, took her to her room and gave her Benjamin's schedule. Carter left her alone to tidy up everything, but she was eager to meet Benjamin.

She hadn't seen the kid yet. What if he was some spoiled brat? Sarah didn't give too much thought to it, but now she was starting to regret not asking to see the boy first.

Also, there was no sign of Mr. Reed anywhere. She passed by his study and room, but the mansion was empty, except for the bunch of servants.

She could feel that most of them were very polite to her, some even friendly. After a few minutes - or was it hours? - Sarah heard a knock on the door.

"Come in!" she yelled, sat down on the carpet, folding the rest of her clothes before putting it in the drawer.

"Miss Johnson, I mean… Sarah, the young Mr. Reed arrived. He was out with the boss and is now taking a shower. You can meet him after that."

"Oh… Okay!" she said, getting up. "Do I need to help with that?"

"It's okay. Mr. Reed is doing that himself. He likes to take care of the boy when he's at home."

Sarah nodded, unable to think of an answer. It surprised her to know that Mr. Reed was that kind to his nephew. She didn't know why, but even though she heard he cared too much about the little boy, she couldn't picture that cold and rude man being gentle with a kid. And now she was dying to see it.

But she wasn't going to disobey any orders. She waited until the boy finished his bath and went towards his room a few minutes later.

This time, she made sure to be well-presented. She didn't have to use uniforms, which was good, but she also would have to spend some money to buy more clothes now, otherwise, she wouldn't have a lot to wear to work every day.

Jeans and a shirt couldn't go wrong, but she brushed her hair and applied some natural makeup. After all, she couldn't be intimidating when meeting a five-year-old boy.

She knocked three times on the door, but nobody answered. When she was about to try again, the door burst open and she saw herself staring at those honey-colored eyes one more time.

Sarah wasn't ready for that, but pulled herself together immediately.

"Oh, good afternoon, Mr. Reed." Bowing her head, she had a glimpse of a tiny little person wrapped around Victor's leg, looking at her with enormous eyes. Mr. Reed and Benjamin looked so much alike, that it was hard to believe that the kid was not his.

But then she remembered seeing some pictures in the living room. There was a couple with a tiny baby in one of the photos, and the man was very similar to Mr. Reed, except a bit older. She assumed it was his brother, but she didn't have the courage to ask the butler what happened to the kid's parents. It wouldn't be a good thing to be asking about her boss' family so early.

"Hello, Miss Johnson." Victor got out of the way so she could come in, and the little kid followed him, still looking at her like she was some type of fairy.

"Oh, hello there!" she said, squatting down kindly and putting herself in the same level as him. "What's your name?" she asked, even though she already knew the answer.

"Benjamin," he answered timidly. "But you can call me Ben. I prefer Ben."

"Ben! That's a very beautiful name," she replied with a big and bright smile.

"What is your name?" he asked in return, still hugging his uncle's leg.

"My name is Sarah. It's very nice to meet you." She stretched her hand forward in a professional manner, but still trying to sound playful, so the kid wouldn't be intimidated.

And to her surprise, he smiled at her and loosened one of his hands from Victor's leg and grabbed hers, shaking it like a big man.

"Likewise," Benjamin replied playfully as well, sounding like an important businessman, which made Sarah's head fall back as she let out a very loud laugh, forgetting that her boss was analyzing their interaction with very curious eyes.
