Zach realised too late that he was outmatched by a group of women. In his confusion he ran down a street with a dead end and when he turned to find another route, they were already blocking it. He felt the blood dripping down his face and realised that his face had sustained a cut when he had been slapped.
The purple haired woman approached him and he ducked past her. This was one of the only times his short height was an advantage.
Another of the women in the group caught his wrist which he managed to shake free. He ran back the way he had come, his breath coming in short panicked bursts. This time there was another person walking on the pavement a short distance away which was a relieving sight. There was no way they would attack him with someone else present.
Then someone grabbed his arm and he saw the purple headed woman had caught up to him. He cried out in pain from her tight grip.
She was intent on not letting him escape.
A boot came flying
Darien couldn’t hide his shocked reaction. His mouth dropped open and he gave her his full attention. He had never expected to be recognised by Zach’s flatmate of all people. “Please don’t tell Zach,” he said quickly. “He will feel very guilty about forgetting my face.” Emilia looked him in the eyes. He was getting the feeling that she was a very straightforward person that didn’t take any nonsense. “I’m not going to tell him. I don’t want to upset him either,” she replied. “I always thought Darien Harper looked like the man I saw snogging Zach. I was put off the trail by your straight playboy persona. That wasn’t what I came to say by the way.” Darien blinked in surprise. She was certainly unique and was definitely going to be difficult to handle. She knew he was gay and she was very protective of Zach and knew him as the man who had made out with him. He crossed his arms and tried to look more intimidating. It likely wasn’t going to work, bu
Darien didn’t like the idea of telling Zach the truth about the masked ball. It would ruin the balance of their current relationship and would make Zach feel guilty about forgetting him. Despite that, he knew it was the right thing to do. It was just going to take a lot of courage to be able to tell him. He noticed that Emilia hadn’t mentioned being open about his romantic feelings for Zach. Perhaps she didn’t think they were a good fit. “Everything you said is valid. I might just not be able to do the last one immediately,” he said. Emilia didn’t look disappointed. It seemed like she had been expecting him to say that. “That’s fine. The other things are more of a priority.” Darien had an important request for her. “Could we trade phone numbers in case we need to contact each other?” Emilia wordlessly took her phone out and he read out his phone number. He noted hers as well and tucked his phone back in his pocket.
Zach was sent to the first aid office within an hour of starting work by Becca who was concerned about his cheek and his constant winces. The swelling had gone down overnight, but the red colour remained and the small cut in the centre was still visibly fresh. The first aid department disinfected the cut and gave him a simple painkiller to take. He had been told to see a doctor if there was no improvement and to leave work early if that pain was too much. The intern was determined to work through the discomfort. He was helping Robert out with a work that was very close to the publishing deadline and he didn’t want to abandon the older editor. He returned to the erotica department office feeling a little better and sat down at his desk without looking around. He noticed within seconds that the atmosphere wasn’t right and looked over at Becca. He could see the explanation for the strange air immediately.Darien was sitting right there. He
Zach took a seat at his desk in the erotica department feeling lighter. He had testified at the police station the afternoon before and Emilia had also provided a witness statement. He was also on his way to getting over Darien.Things were looking up. He had gone out to a restaurant the night before with Emilia and her boyfriend. It was different going somewhere without Darien and not worrying about being recognised by the wrong people. It was much more relaxing. His work tasks were getting easier which showed he had improved greatly. That was something to be happy about.“I’ve put the job posting up!” Becca exclaimed excitedly from her desk. “I really hope people want to work in this department.”Zach couldn’t comment on that as he hadn’t applied for the internship knowing it was going to be in the erotica department.“Of course, they’ll want to work here, I’m here,” Meghan scoffed
Zach was shocked into silence by her words. Adam was interested in him like that? He had mentioned he was gay some time that morning so it was entirely possible. It just felt like it was unlikely to be the truth.“He’s really into you,” Meghan continued. “He kept looking at you and he did say that you made a strong impression on him during his interview.”Zach was finding it harder to deny Adam’s interest towards him in his mind. He had noticed the glances and Adam had made it clear that he found him cute.It was just impossible for him to have a boyfriend for another ten months.“I’m sure he’s just looking for a friend closer to him in age,” he said and walked on.He didn’t need any romantic complications right now. Meghan grinned and fell back into step with him.“I don’t think it’s just that. I’ll stop talking about it though.”Zach pick
Zach panicked when he realised what he had just let slip. He thought he was nearly over Darien, now it sounded like he had been pining for him.“I miss you too,” Darien replied after a few seconds. “You really have made a difference to my life and it’s sad to know it’s my fault that we can’t go anywhere together.”The intern breathed a sigh of relief. Darien hadn’t noticed how pitiful he had sounded and felt the same way.“It’s sad,” he agreed. “I feel like I’m ready to meet with you again soon. It will have to be your house though.”Sparks would definitely fly between Emilia and Darien if they saw each other again and not for romantic reasons. They really should never meet again.“I’m happy to meet with you again,” Darien said quickly. “Please don’t force yourself to if you don’t want to. It is my fault that you were attacked tha
Darien realised in that moment how naive he had been the entire time. Zach might be banned from dating over the course of their contract right now, but when the contracted time period was up, Zach could pick a boyfriend freely.Zach would reject the new editor now, but when the year was up, he might say yes to a date with him and he would be forced to watch Zach date someone else. From what he had seen in the lobby his romantic rival could make Zach smile despite just knowing him for one day. It had taken Zach a while to warm up to him. He didn’t have a chance against a friendly and open person.“Mr Harper?” Becca asked.Darien blinked and knew he had visibly zoned out whilst talking to her. He had to pull himself together.“I will leave it to your judgement,” he said smoothly. “We don’t frown on relationships here, but if things get out of hand, you will need to talk to the person in question.”
Zach had never felt so shocked in his life. Darien was standing in front of him, confessing his love and had even written a book proposal about his feelings. He bit his tongue to check this was happening for real. It hurt so he knew it definitely wasn’t part of a dream. Darien had really confessed his love to him. The billionaire pulled his hood back up and replaced his sunglasses on his face. Zach stood still on the spot, watching him, unable to say a word. “I’m going to leave you in peace now. You might not want to see me again when you read everything that’s written in that folder,” Darien said. “Just to reiterate in case you become unsure, I do love you.” Zach didn’t recover until the front door had closed behind Darien. What had just happened? He slowly walked into the living room with dead legs and dropped down onto the sofa. Darien liked him as more than a best friend. He had never picked up on any hints before
