The ringtone from my cell phone blasted through the room. It had for the past few minutes. There was a part of me who wanted to watch it ring without picking it up. The other part, the obedient son, knew the consequences of neglecting his mother’s call. She was a crazy person. This was the main reason she never rang more than twice. The first would be considered as a missed call. The second would be intentional, not even if it was not. Mom was never the person to piss off. If anyone thought my temper was bad, my mother’s was worse. And unlike me, she didn’t care. 

I vacuumed a nostril of sea air for courage and answered the phone, hoping my voice sounded and my face appeared chirpy enough. “Hi, Mom. How's the city life?”
