Fifty Eight

As we stood behind at a safe distance, Maddie scattered white candles along the edge of the cottage, forming a complete circle surrounding the home.

We had offered to help her set up but she was convinced Jacques would somehow mess it up and it wouldn’t be fair to let us get involved, if he couldn’t. Knowing the man-child Jacques was, she probably wasn’t wrong.

“I’m not the liability you all think I am,” Jacques groaned. “You’re all so dramatic.”

Maddie shot him a look which read ‘really?’ as she joined our side. “You managed to drop the three candles you were holding on the way here multiple times.” She scoffed, to which he rolled his eyes and muttered a few choice words in response.

“Anyway,” Nate spoke. “What next?” He asked. Maddie redirected her attention to the cottage and clicked her right fingers. Immediately, a bright spark erupted one by one on the candles set out, brightening the scene before us.

“Okay, I’m going to need silence to concentrate,” she quickly shot Jacque
