Chapter 37

When I entered the house where I grew up, my brother was the first person I saw. He had the same light brown skin, rounder eyes, and unruly dark hair appearance. But I didn't resemble the person I had been before I left at all. When he saw me, he shouted out in disbelief, "What the fuck?"

My mother told me to "Roland, language" as she made her way from the kitchen to the living room. When she noticed me, she skidded to a stop. She glanced at my new appearance while blinking.

She exhaled, "What the fuck?" similar to what she had just yelled at Roland for stating.

"Mabella? Hija?"

Hey, madre, I said with a warm smile. Even if my mother and I didn't always get along and were at opposite ends of a fairly broad spectrum, she was still my mother. She reached out and tightly embraced me. She held me at arm's length and examined me before releasing me.
