...Damian POV...
I was going in circles. Each time I thought I had figured out a way to find her, it seemed that she was already several steps ahead of me. I had tried contacting her work to figure out if they had heard from her. However, they just told me that she had submitted her notice and hasn't been seen since.
I even contacted her assistant. However, they told me the same thing. They informed me that we were not to worry about the building. It would still go as planned. Her assistant would take over where Haley left off. Since the overall design was complete, all that was left was ensuring the concept came out to plan.
I had even contacted Jessica in hopes that she would help me. But little did I realize that she was pissed at me as well. It turns out that Haley had stopped talking to her as well. Haley had called Jess the night of and told her about what had happened and that she would be leaving. Haley told Jess not to look for her, as we wouldn't
The preparations for the wedding went by smoothly. Zane and Jessica had wanted a small and intimate gathering. Zane and Jessica invited just close friends and family. Including Haley's parents. Haley's parents were good friends with Jessica's parents. Both families were connected as if they were one. Jessica assured me, though, that there would be no bad blood between me and Haley's parents. I wouldn't have blamed them if there was. I was, after all, the reason why they were no longer in contact with their only daughter. Finally, the big day had arrived. I was so happy for both my brother and for Jessica. Spending time with them only proved how perfect they were for one another. They were both big powerhouses, but neither put the other down. They only helped to achieve their dreams. With Jessica's help, we had gotten rid of the Cobra problem. She had managed to make sure each member was locked up. I was thankful we had her on our side cause ever since what happened in P
...Haley POV...It's been one year since I last saw Damian. Seeing him now is a bittersweet moment. From the moment I saw him and the look of belonging in his eyes, I wanted to run and jump into his arms. But I couldn't wait for so many reasons. The first was that when I saw him look at me, it reminded me of the last time we were together. Of how I caught him sleeping with another woman in our bed just hours after I'd been assaulted. That ache was like nothing else. No one truly understood how powerful a heartbreak could truly be until they've lost the love of their lives. After I fled New York, I went to California. Since it was on the other side of the states, I knew Damian wouldn't even think of looking for me there. I figured he would just assume that I went back to London.I had worked on an account for a client years ago that was based out of California. They had wanted to hire me privately for a few more jobs they had coming up. However, I politely d
"I know it's both too late and doesn't mean much. But I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything I did. You deserve better than me, but me being the selfish person I am, I don't want to give you up. I will never stop loving you. I tried, but it never worked. You're the only one for me, and I don't care what you need me to do to prove that I truly mean that with all my heart." Damian spoke, letting me cry into his chest. He held his arms tight around me as if at any moment I would break if he let go.I didn't know what to say or do. He'd said everything I'd dreamed he'd say to me. I desperately wanted to say yes. So that I would take him back, and we could continue where we left off. However, what he didn't realize, was that my life had become far too complicated for that to be an option."It would be better if you forgot me." I said. Unable to look him in the eyes. Instead saying it to the ground. I knew if I looked into his perfect ocean blue eyes, he would have me swo
...Damian POV...One word. That's all that was said, but it managed to tell so much. With that one word, I was left with so many questions. Why was she afraid of the Cobras? Were they still after her? I was sure Jessica had handled them, but perhaps there was something she missed. The more I looked at her now; I could see that she was petrified. So I pulled her into my arms, showing her that there was nothing to be afraid of. I would do everything in my power to keep her safe. But I need to know what she wasn't telling me. It was clear that the Cobras had terrified the hell out of her. I needed to know why she was so afraid."Tell me. What's going on? What are you afraid of." I asked. Then as if I was in a movie, she pushed me away and became a different person altogether. She looked around nervously as she got down from the car as if looking for something or someone. Once she saw no one was nearby, she stepped away from me."I-I'm sorry. But I can't. I l
...Haley POV...By the time Damian finished making love to me, we were both left breathless in a heap in the office. By now the Library had been closed for a few hours now. The lights had gone out throughout the building, signalling that we were the only ones left. I looked over to Damian and smiled. I couldn't believe we'd just done that. But at the same time, I wanted to do it all over again. My phone began to ring, breaking us out of our love-filled trance. I looked around the office, trying to get to my phone."Who's calling you?" Damian asked. I saw Damian reach down and pick up my phone from off the ground. He looked at the display and frowned."Who's Kayden?" He asked, looking annoyed. My blood ran cold when I heard the name. Kayden never phoned. If he did, it was because there was an emergency.I reached for my phone and grabbed it out of Damian's hand."I'll explain later." I replied, answering my phone."Hello?" I asked."Haley? Where are you?""I'm at the library. Why? W
"Don't. I don't want you to hurt yourself." I said, trying to move his hand away. However, he remained persistent and ran his thumb over my cheek."I don't care how painful it is. Nothing will ever stop me from taking care of you. I've been a dick to you in the past. But still, you love me. Lord knows I don't deserve it, but I'm thankful you're giving me, us, another chance. You are by far the most important person in my life. That will never change." Damian replied, holding my head tight against his chest. I sucked in a breath but let him take care of me. We remained silent for a while before the car stopped. I looked up and saw that we were downtown, about twenty minutes from the library. "Let's get off here." I replied. Damian nodded, then I helped him to stand up, letting him lean on me for support. We took a few turns outside the underground station until we came to a bus stop. We climbed on board until our next destination. I needed to get us outside of the city. There was a
We'd been driving for a few hours already. The trip had been mostly silent. Damian forced me to pull over and eat. I was happy he didn't ask where we were going. "Hey, do you think we could call my brother so that he knows I'm ok?" Damian asked after a while."Sure. Use mine. It's a burner, so it's untraceable. Just don't tell him about anything that happened. Also, don't mention you're with me. It will only put their lives in danger.""What can I say then?""Tell them that you were sure you found me but got stuck behind some cars in a traffic jam and lost me. Say that you think you may have a lead, but want to be sure before you say anything."Damian nodded his head and did just that. He called his brother, who was, in fact, worried, and calmed him down, telling him he was safe. We needed to keep them out of the loop for now. It was already dangerous enough to have Damian involved. I couldn't risk the Cobras going after them as well. After Damian ended his call, he passed me back th
The car had gone quiet after my response. There was nothing that either of us could say. I knew Damian was just as worried as I was, if not more."Anyways, Kayden thought it was in my best interests to learn how to protect myself. The first was always knowing where exits were located at all times. I make it a habit not to go in any building I haven't had a chance to memorize the schematics for." "Kayden also taught me to always have a backup plan. We can never know where they're at all times, so it's best to have an escape route planned in advance.""That explains the library, the subway, and the bus. Wait. What about the airport?" Damian asked as if only remembering it now."What about the airport?" I asked."What even happened back there? How do you go from asking for a Taxi to getting in a plane a moment later?""Oh, that. It's spy talk. Kayden taught it to me. There are safe places spread throughout the country. He made me memorize each one in case something ever happened. Kayden
